Can someone point me to the process for acquiring surplus CG property? I'm specifically interested in a non-standard boat, something like a Boston Whaler that the CG no longer has a requirement for.

See the Q&A "How can our Flotilla get USCG Surplus Property?" on the AuxKB "http://kb.cgaux.info/kb/?View=entry&EntryID=334".

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

You should also read the thread CGAuxA wants to get your Flotilla a New Air Facility.... I'm sure the CGAuxAssInc is just dying to help you get a boat. (Some time after all the junketing and partying are over).

Realistically, the only way to get a boat is to have such a great relationship with a local unit that they're likely to give you their's when they're done with it. I'd say the chances of you getting one through some general request are slim to none. I really don't understand why this shouldn't be easy as pie, but it isn't.

All I have to offer is word of mouth from our District Captain. He reports that this topic was discussed at NACON (how could we know that?) and it was suggested that rather than giving boats to 3rd world countries, they should make them available to those of us who are helping with the mission here.

The CG is already potentially liable for Auxie boat operations whether we're in a CG-owned boat or not (mostly not).

I think one issue about previously owned CG vessels is it may be like buying a retired police car or taxi. These boats potentially could be beat to death and the maintenance could break the Flotilla's bank.

In my experience, maintenance goes down on a soon to be retired government vehicle, so the new owner gets a surprise on his first test drive Eek
