Coast Guard duty more than rescues.

The article is about the CG on South Padre Island, TX. The Aux is mentioned at the end of the article.

quote:
The active duty sailors are assisted by volunteer civilians in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary concentrates on teaching boating safety classes to the public and conducting voluntary boat inspections, he said.

"He" is a Boatswain's Mate Third Class and is identified at the top of the article.

Once part of the regular armed forces, later transferred to the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard was made part of the Department of Homeland Security, which was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Looks like someone didn't do their research... again! Roll Eyes

Well, you could say that it is true in that during WWII, the CG was officially part of the Navy (i.e., part of the regular armed forces) and then later went to DoT. Yep, that reading would skip quite a few steps and be more than a little mis-leading, but technically true.

That's odd because I was in the USCG when it fell under DOT and my Military ID said "Armed Forces of The United States" on it! Just another half-azzed article by a reporter who didn't bother to check out his/her facts! -Jeff

Not even technically true. Hey, the CG just turned 218. For the majority of that time it fell under the Treasury Dep't. For maybe 5 years it was under the Navy. In the 60's it went under the Dep't of Transportation, and only recently under the Dep't of Big Brother Is Watching You.

The article implies that if you are not under DOD you are not a "regular" armed service. Roll Eyes

Hmm....so am I to assume that we are currently part of the irregular armed forces?

Since no one seems to grasp the concept of making a tongue-in-cheek comment, I'll try again.....technically it is also true that the Coast Guard was once part of the regular Armed Forces. The use of the word once implies that it is no longer the case, but you could also read it to mean that they were once made part of the regular Armed Forces and that they have never actually left that status. Hence, the quote would be accurate, but again misleading.

Kinda hard to grasp "tonus in cheek" comments when no voice is involved. That's why some of us use emoticons.....

No one but forewatch is actually going to stand up for reporters here, so I assumed that everyone would realize I was being somewhat sarcastic.
