We have met the enemy and he is us. Pogo |
I found elements of the following story from the Stanley News & Press to be a bit strange. The story, based on the newspapers address, is in NC. Emphasis added.
First impression - if your are trying to get enough members to survive then trying to get enough to start another unit may be a case of your reach exceeding your grasp. Stick to the original goal.
The "will receive" sounds like an order - something volunteers don't take kindly too. It should have read "may". At first I thought it might be an oversight and then I read the following quote:
That may be local policy but it isn't Nat policy. I cannot think of a better way to scare off potential candidates for membership. Most volunteers want to start small and get their feet wet in the organization. Telling them right off the bat they are expected to do everything is a bit over the top. And then you read:
That makes you wonder what missions the Aux in NC is performing - doesn't it?
They get bonus points for honesty on that one!!!!
Repeat - as we have read here so many times - The Aux Does Not Have Rank! Members hold office not rank. |

Interesting story. Also, not to split hairs but while this is policy, the CFR doesn't read that way.
How is that for gas on the fire? Peace--M |

The statement appears in the AuxMan 1.A.5. Customs and Courtesies
Apparently the CG has decided that since we are not militiary, as specified in the USC, then we cannot hold rank. However, that would be an interpretation of the USC - other then being non-military, the rank prohibition is not explicitly in the USC or the CFR. However, since 1939 the CG has steadfastly refused to allow the Aux rank, although the TRs had it. Nor has it allowed the Aux true military titles, like CAP, although the TRs had them. Keep pouring ... |

Three years ago we voted to disband our flotilla due to lack of membership. In spite of protestations from division we went ahead and spent all our money on a disband party and had a good ol' time. Anothet flotilla took a dump this year. The division is down to five flotillas with another flotilla on it's deathbed.
When will the brass consider consolidation as a means of survuval for the Auxiliary? |

That's why I made the distinction (albeight a slight reference) between policy and the CFR. Hal has correctly stated the policy, thanks! --M |

Speaking of Policy - the following was posted to the old HalfDeck Forum - I forgot by who. thought it was funny and saved it. It is based on a similar generic thingee. For your reading pleasure:

I'd say that if in the Aux you want to do something you will receive training in it (or at a minimum prove you don't need the training by showing you can already do the tasks). Nothing wrong with that wording.

The entire thread smells a little "rank' to me.

I think you guys are blowing some crappy reporter's story a bit overboard.

Sounded as though there was a bit of a squabble. Squabble? They're all dead! Oh! Must have been more of a tiff then. ![]() |
Ad Nauseum.
I believe 99.2% of the media have no clue as to what they writing about. Just yesterday one of the big stories was the scuba diver killed when lightning hit his "oxygen" tank. (Common Misconception #1: Divers DO NOT dive with pure oxygen! O2 is Toxic at pressure!!) ________________________________________________ "I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I believe 99.2 % of the people who criticize the media have no idea what they're talking about. |

Thanks for making my point, GeeJay. "Media" does not necessarily mean "newspapers." I appreciate you posting that.

Basic Training |
Something else to consider too- consolidation (if I understand your intent with the word correctly) would allow Divisions to better aggregate rapid-callout teams (Boatcrews, land mobile units, etc..) without having to stay 'within' a flotilla to put together a crew... it would make for better training on multiple platforms as well (I couldn't tell you bubkus about any opfacs in my Division except the two I crew on, for example) just a thought (I do occasionally have one) |

Um...we cross flotilla/division train/crew all the time. Are there areas that "force" you to stay within your flotilla? wow.

In our AOR we have no choice but to go to other flotillas and divisions for crew. Crew people are hard to get here. By not having a regular crew the people we do get never really learn the boat. There is just too much machinery and equipment on a forty foot OPFAC to be learned on one patrol. We have to do our quals in October and I know the anchoring evolution will be a toughie as I cannot expose an inexperienced crew member to the ever hungry teeth of the wildcat, just waiting to snatch a finger or a hand. Maybe we will get an understanding QE.
