Last year we were taking part in the annual Christmas Boat Parade aboard a yacht club boat. There were three OPFACs and seven yacht club boats guiding the entreants in the regatta, all in coms with the PATCOM commander aboard an 82. During the event, a female type person on board an OPFAC gave the PATCOM an "over and out." I am still hearing about it in the yacht club.

Three years ago I was going up the Hudson River for a weekend trip to Kingston. When I got to Bear Mountain (a few miles south of West Point), there was the HMS Bounty leaving the dock and getting ready to move north toward the Point. When I got to West Point, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater was there, along with a Revolutionary War tall ship, and both were moving out into the River off the Point. CGAux boats were converging on the Point from North and South. Clearly a marine event was in the making.

Listening in on 21A, I heard the Patcom briefing the Auxiliary boats about the upcoming “attack” by the British, as the HMS Bounty was to come up and “fire” on West Point, then to be driven off by the two US ships. At the end of the briefing, one of the Auxiliary boats answered with an “Over and Out”.

Immediately, an obviously incredulous and unidentified voice came on the air and said:
“Over and Out??? What the
heck does that mean?”

So, the fact that she has ovaries makes her unable to comprehend the proper way to speak on the radio? What is your point? Do clue me in since I'm just a mere "female type person" who obviously doesn't have the grand intelligence of you who possesses an almighty "willie" between your legs.

PCness run amuck Roll Eyes
When I answered the phone while watchstanding I always said "Auxiliaryman ***** speaking." instead of the PC term Auxiliarist because it sounded unmilitary and, frankly, dorky.
The Marines are going through the transition from Woman Marine to Female Marine because of the old meaning of Woman Marine as a support person instead of a gun-toting warrior, which is what they are now.
There, I used all sort of words for which Forewatch can become even more disconcerted.
Have fun Popcorn

Why not just "Marine"? You don't say, "Jewish Marine" "Black Marine".. a Marine is a Marine.

And, I'm fine with the words, "Auxiliaryman XXX" I feel that is gender neutral. I would have felt comfortable saying that myself, as I have referred to myself as "chairman" when I was serving on a board. "Chairwoman" is a silly term and unnecessary. I see no need to genderize these words.

But, we're now off the point-- which is calling to the attention one's race or gender when it has absolutely nothing to do with the story.

We're flogging a deceased equine until somebody thinks of something else to yak about. Angry Whip
The thing about "chair, man, woman, person" got to it's best when people started referring to themselves as "chair", causing wonder if other furniture was included in the committee as well Big Grin

I found an update of sorts to the original story. The first post, aside from the bad html code, is a rehash of the original. The last para of the first post is the update.

quote:
A 51 footer run aground in LB with Coast Guard at the helm. I saw it and it sure looked worse from the stern and starboard sides. I spoke with 2 coasties on the scene and they mentioned that they got a call of a grounding, so they had to call one of their investigators out to the scene and he answered the phone already on the yacht!! The coasties ran the thing aground in a no boat allowed zone.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that the "Coastie" on the boat was really an Auxie with the Asst Pollution Investigation PQS. It would be really bad if a Real Deal Coastie was on that thing went it went aground - in an area where boats aren't supposed to be at all.

BTW - then read the comments. Repeat over and over until you convince yourself - There are no Wannabes in the Aux. Then read the comments again.

Because, unlike "Jewish Marines" or "Black Marines," there are different policies for male and female marines. They have different PRT standards, they have different quarters, different uniforms, etc., etc....

Forewatch, go to the Marines forum and talk to Sgt Shaw 86 about the whole issue of Female Marines on the Women Marine thread, I'm sure she'll be glad to enlighten you.
Looked at the blog entries, yep, some see wannabees, some see old folk who probably refuse to realize that they should be training their replacements instead of continung the mission without noticing the onset of senility and/or lessening physical abilities which endanger not only themselves but also the people we are supposed to serve and protect.

Ouch! Wow, after reading those blog comments I'd say that we have some remedial PR work to do in that area.

That extreme hostility is why I say one of our primary surface ops missions is nodding and smiling. When we're patrolling a major part of our mission is building good-will with the boating community. We need that good will because a major part of our port security plan is the willingness of recreational boaters to augment our eyes and ears.

If as you patrol, folks shake their fists at you as compared to waving and smiling, your mission is distorted. Many folks are distrustful and wary of law-enforcement entities so we should be the approachable and affable "we're on your side" organization out there.
