So, wait. I, the descendant of slaves and natives, must change to suit the ways of the descendants of criminals, profiteers, and social misfits, merely because the likes of you say so? That's rich.
If you really wanted to assimilate to the ways of this country, you'd live off the land, like the REAL natives. That's the problem with nativism, Forewatch. It's not about natives opposing foreign intrusions, it's about immigrants and their descendants looking down on more recent immigrants and their descendants.
It's very interesting that you assumed that I was a recent immigrant, though. Shipping and archaeological records would prove that my family could likely look upon yours as Johnny-Come-Latelys.
Moral of the story: don't pick a nativist fight with an FFV, please.

If I recall correctly, FW's father was a firefighter.

He put out fires. . .

Forewatch sets them! Eek

well, heck, fires keep people warm and cook food. What good is FW's rants? If I could hang my soap kettle over the computer and whip up a batch while he goes on, it wouldn't be quite so bad.

I think I told this story before, but ...

My wife and I were visiting her grandfather in a Lutheran nursing home up around Seattle.

"How is this place?" she asked

"Oh, the people are very nice to me, and helpful." he responded.

Then added (in a whisper), "But there are an awful lot of Norwegians here. . ."

Big Grin

It's pretty bad when the Scananoovians (sic) can't get along with on another.

BTW, I'm not picking on them (or maybe I am), I also know a lot of Irish and German jokes (my mixed heritage).

I live in a city with a large muslim population (mainly from Afghanistan) and, as a result, some very fine middle eastern restaurants, and even a few Chinese Muslim restaurants (No sweet and sour pork with an ugly red sauce here!).

Okay, now I'm getting hungry. . .

You live in a city with an Afghan population? Awesome! I remember when I first saw the Afghan bread with nigella seeds in the markets around Boston. I was delighted. There are a few Chinese Muslim restaurants around here, and two rather chic Afghan ones. As I live in a city with a large, well-established Muslim population, there are also loads of fried chicken and pizza places run by Muslims- where the food is all halal, the Muslim equivalent of kosher. My husband would love it- it would mean a break from my pan-Indo European fusion cooking.

I'm beginning to think this is how the regulars here go about killing threads that have already answered their original questions....

Not so quick if you don't mind.

Earlier you wrote:

Could you give us the "Cliff Notes" version of the differences between halal and kosher? thanks

OK, halal is far simpler than kosher. It does not require that dishes be used for certain functions, or that food must be prepared in a certain fashion.
If one avoids certain substances (pork and all porcine products, alcohol, flowing blood, predators) you're about halfway there. Muslims, like Jews, have a slaughter procedure for animals, but Muslims can eat kosher meat, and there is no equivalent of glatt kosher for Muslims- if it's halal, it's completely halal. Now, there are a few slight differences of opinion- certain schools shun shellfish or catfish, and there are rulings to state that meats normally lawful for Muslims but not slaughtered in the prescribed way are OK if there's no Muslim butcher about- but if you invite your Muslim friend to your kosher home, the only thing she's likely to have to avoid would be the wine. (Muslims- the world's designated driver. No wonder so many are cabbies!)
