The OpsPolMan allows the FC to determine who can be an official mentor (sign off the task books). If your flotilla has such a policy then you have to be an officially designated mentor.

My old flotilla did this for one year. The Gang of 3 did it to ensure only their friends and cohorts could make it thru the BCQP. Prior to that era any crew could sign off a crew and any coxswain could sign off another coxswain.

Also check the rules. I don't think the mentor has to be current. I believe they can be REYR but only in the first 2 years.

The FC makes the sign of the cross over your head. Big Grin

Only kidding. It can be as informal as him just telling you you are. However, if a flotilla is going to use the formal approach, the FC should probably designate the mentor as such in a letter or memo. When my old flotilla's FC went the mentor route he kept it hidden from the flotilla for over 5 months. He figured since only the cohorts of the Gang of 3 were in the program and the flotilla's rogue coxswains were the mentors, the flotilla didn't need to know he was overturning 40+ years of flotilla tradition and practice. The 3 mentors he picked were an interesting set. All 3 coxswain/mentors had already participated in the infamous covert night ops and had been named in the complaint to the FC for performing illegal ops.

The real irony is that the FC publicly claimed he picked those 3 for their supposed expertise and knowledge of Ops policy. Yet in virtually every document the Gang of 3 wrote and the testimony they gave regarding the illegal covert night ops, they claim they didn't know that and several other basic operational policies.

FWIW - I cannot verify this off their web site but I have been told in the past that 1SR has a formal District level Mentor designation.

Qualified crew may announce their intent to mentor at a Flotilla meeting getting thereby the tacit approval of the FC and FSO-MT. After that just do it. Mentoring crew is loads of fun and fulfilling when the QE congratulates them on being well-trained.
