From: CHDIRAUX Subj: MANDATORY PRIVACY AWARENESS TRAINING -027/07 From: Papp, Robert Admiral Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2007 4:28 PM Subject: MANDATORY PRIVACY AWARENESS TRAINING From: VADM R .J. Papp, Jr., Chief of Staff To: ALL HANDS Subj: MANDATORY PRIVACY AWARENESS TRAINING Ref: (a) Safeguarding Personal Privacy Information; ALCOAST 425/07 (b) DHS Guide to Protecting & Handling Personnel-Related Data 1. There have been numerous recent compromises of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) throughout the Federal government with potentially serious consequences. The Coast Guard maintains a significant amount of information concerning individuals and has a special duty to protect PII from disclosure, loss or misuse. As a result, it is imperative that all Coast Guard personnel receive training on safeguarding PII. 2. I am directing all CG personnel - active-duty, Reserve, Auxiliary, civilian employees (including Non-Appropriated Funds employees) and contractors - who hold an active user account for a CG Standard Work Station (SWS) to review references (a) and (b) no later than 15 October 2007. [Chief Director of Auxiliary Note - Recognizing that many Auxiliarists with SWS accounts do not access them on routine enough basis to meet the 15 October deadline, Auxiliarists are encouraged to review the references as soon as their program support activities allow in lieu of the 15 October deadline. If any issues arise from this allowance, please notify Mr. Steve Minutolo, CG-54211 / (202) 372-1267 / stephen.j.minutolo@uscg.mil]. 3. Reference (a) provides instruction relating to statutory requirements, Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), System of Records Notices (SORNs), safeguarding of PII, and PII breach notification procedures. Reference (b) provides quick reference "dos and don'ts" for protecting and handling personal data. Reviewing this information should take no more than 10 minutes. 4. References (a) and (b) are available at http://www.uscg.mil/foia/Protecting/MPAT.pdf 5. The Coast Guard must remain vigilant in our commitment to safeguarding the privacy of those individuals about whom we hold personal information. More detailed DHS web-based privacy awareness training and a CG instruction on safeguarding personal privacy information and breach of PII notification procedures are being developed and will be issued as soon as they are available. 6. The POC for this issue is CWO Albert Craig, albert.l.craig@uscg.mil, 202 475-3528. 7. The purpose of this list is to keep Auxiliarists as well as all other interested parties abreast of current developments, policies, manuals, etc. All information contained herein and linked is OFFICIAL policy and information. 8. Internet Release and Distribution is Authorized. 9. CG-5421, sends |

We all got that one too! Are you the Chair of the "Committee on Redundancy Committee?"

Believe it or not - I have to defend Ditty on this. For a long time I re-posted ChDirAux and DirAux7 announcement in full on this board. Everyone seemed to like it and no one complained about it.
Not everyone is on the email lists and not everyone checks the ChDiraux site - although they should. OK - enough Mr Nice Guy - back to Ditty and I insulting each other. |

And... this bulletin is just another argument for Auxies refusing to disclose personal information ala PSI!

I'm disappointed -- it took all of near 16 hours before we see that expected post...
I anticipated it much sooner. |

No, you shouldn't. The PSI has ruined the Auxiliary, and I'm going to continue to speak against it until the day that ridiculous background check goes away. So buckle up your Barcalounger.. I haven't even begun yet. |

Quite a broad and unsubstantiated statement...ruined for you I suppose, since you're no longer in the organization because of the PSI. But greater numbers continue to serve, than the minority who departed because of the requirement. I don't consider the Auxiliary "ruined" because a few people left rather than to comply with a background check. The Auxiliary life is quite good for many of us... Happened upon this during this morning's mission. Previously ununkown to the MST at Sector -- he was very appreciative of the report and documentation -- and began the response to address the incident. So, some us have other things we can do -- rather than be limited to crew for the Barcalounger -- like some ex-augmentees... |

That was quite a photo – good for you in spotting it and getting the response going. Do you know what happened? It was interesting to see that the spill was not going up or downstream, but rather parallel to the bridge. If you hear any follow up, please let us know. |

"Ruined" as in so fewer eyes and ears on the water. We lost a lot of excellent people, including one that FL told us about from his area. "Ruined" because it set off a lot of ill feelings among those who stayed. THIS is what this ex-auxie is doing with her time! Helping kids at risk here: here: and here: |

Well, I suppose it would be too much to hope for if you'd limit your PSI rants to one thread instead of posting them in just about every other thread if you can make some strech for relevance... --M (and good work with the kids!) |

Yes, it WOULD be too much to hope for. And thanks for the comment about the kids. It's very rewarding to see how the sea can turn a kid's life around. |
