From ttp://www.auxmdept.org/Trident%20Program%20Info.htm
The Auxiliarist may add a 5/16-inch gold star for each PQS completed and entered in AUXDATA until they earn the Trident device at which time the ribbon will be removed (like the Specialty Course ribbon) and be replaced by the Auxiliary Trident device.

However unlike the Specialty Course ribbon you can continue to earn PQS after you earn the Trident Device (4 PQSs) also you can earn more then 4 PQSs without earning the Trident Device, there are other training requirements. Is there a limit to the number of Stars you can have on the Marine Safety Trident Training Ribbon. Can you wear the ribbon, to indicate that you have more than 4 PQS, or is earning more that 4 PQS just a feel good award.

Thanks
Bruce

You answered your own question - the Trident device replaces the ribbon.

You wear the Trident device by itself - no matter how many PQS's you hold above and beyond the required 4 to earn it.

I think what he's saying is: if you complete more than 4 PQS BEFORE earning the trident device, do you add another ribbon to indicate further PQS completed beyond four. My guess is no.

There is a physical limitation to the number of attachments that can go on a ribbon. In the CG, gold stars are replaced by silver stars to designate multiple awards of certain ribbonns and medals above a certain number. I can't speak to the CGAUX way of doing things.

What exactly are you asking here? If the 4 PQS earned qualify you for the trident, then you take off the ribbon and wear the trident.

Basically, if you have more than 4 PQS, you don't get to wear anything to indicate that.

AUX is the same.

The trident has other requirements besides the 4 PQS, such as 4 years of service in marine safety, etc. So it is possible to complete more than 4 PQS and still not be authorized to wear the trident.

Hehe...

If you have done 4 of the PQS's, and you have finished the tests that are required for the awarding of the ribbon then you've earned a conditional or temporary trident (made permanent once you have your 4 years of service in the MS field)... so no need for the ribbon if you have your 4 PQS's.Smile

As I understand it that's not true - you actually need 96 hours of service for one year before being authorized the temporary trident (as it was explained to me by the Trident Coordinator at Sector).

You also can lose the temporary trident if you fail to show that you are 'active' in MS/EP, which again backs up the fact that one needs more than just the educational pre-reqs (including the PQSs).

I know we have some people in my division who are interested in earning the ribbon and getting the educational requirements met, but have no intent to ever fulfill the actual MS service requirements to earn the device (many because they are so deeply involved in other programs) - so I'm interested in the answer to...

it would seem that the answer in that case is to switch to silver stars once your ribbon is full of gold ones.

If you can get 4 PQS's in a year without doing at least 96 hours of MS service.... then I'd have to call BS.Smile

The completion of a PQS isn't sitting in a classroom and having your buddy sign it off for you after a 4 hour class. Almost all of them require many hours of study along with alot of hands on experience performing the actual mission.

The Trident program isn't designed for those peeps who are ribbon/badge hunting, but it is for those who actually care about working in the MS field. I could care less about those who just want the ribbon but don't want to do the service....Smile
