The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the deaths of four UK soldiers in Afghanistan - including the first British woman to die in active service since the conflict began.

Next of kin have been informed.

The deaths take the number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November 2001 to 106.
It is the biggest single loss of life for UK forces in the country since September 2006, when 14 were killed during an RAF Nimrod crash near Kandahar.
Sky defence correspondent Geoff Meade said the woman - an intelligence officer - was the first British female to lose her life in Afghanistan. Six have been killed in Iraq.

Meade, with British forces in Afghanistan, said: "This is another sad landmark in the campaign..."

A bad day indeed.

Turns out the three males soldiers whom died were Reserve SAS troops.

The 5 where being transported in a 'Snatch' Land Rover in a convoy headed-up by the local and Canadian Forces.

Our thoughts are with the family & friends at this time.

Wife 'died a hero' in Afghanistan

The first British female soldier killed in Afghanistan has been praised as a "hero" by her husband.

Corporal Sarah Bryant from Cumbria died with three men in a blast on Tuesday, bringing the number of soldiers who have died in Afghanistan to 106.

The three other soldiers were named as Cpl Sean Robert Reeve, Lance Corporal Richard Larkin and Paul Stout.

Cpl Bryant's husband, fellow soldier Carl, said: "My wife was a truly special person who died a hero."

The explosion happened east of Lashkar Gah, in Helmand Province while they were manning a vehicle checkpoint...
