Brit blokes banned by Medicine Hat bars
British soldiers vomit, urinate and expose themselves in pubs, say owners

Last Updated: Friday, June 20, 2008 | 10:24 AM

The Dayz Off Pub in Medicine Hat posted a sign requiring British soldiers to show proof of Alberta residency — effectively preventing their entry. (Stuart Hardiker) Citing drunken and disorderly conduct, some bars near a southern Alberta military training base are banning British soldiers.

Bars in Medicine Hat are used to serving British military personnel who work or train at Canadian Forces Base Suffield, 50 kilometres west of the city. But run-ins with theft, vandalism and drunkenness have some bars refusing entry to British soldiers...

...Stuart Hardiker, who has served in both the British army and the Canadian military, said he asked a hostess at one bar about a sign reading, No British Soldiers Allowed...

It may sound like an outrage but I served with the brits more than once and believe me, they are a drinking bunch when off duty and have seen personally how things get out of hand so this is really no surprise to me. Good bunch of squadies they are and they kick arse but they also kick arse off duty too.

If such a sign exists, SHAMEFUL!
Those soldiers who did these things should be punished and that they have not been or have been doing these things, reflects a lack of discipline. The article is not clear and more detail is needed, whether this has been ongoing or this is one of those incidents where it happened once or twice and now everything is out of proportion. The British military has always been the model military and to think that this is happening on a large and on going scale is, to say the least, distressing!
However, posting signs like the one mentioned is beyond distressing, it is disgusting!
IMHO...
Respectfully, SUNLINER81

I'm sorry to say, Sunliner, that "going large a bit" has been a failing of the British soldier for about three centuries, particularly at ENDEX. As has them being banned from even half respectable establishments.
However as Yankee' says a lot of this could have been alleviated by a decent Monkey presence if only there were enough of them.

They're always welcome at the local Legion, provided they behave themselves and follow the rules - which generally don't involve drinking oneself to embarrassment.

May some of 'patriot' would open a bar where they can 'be themselves'. Do I scent an investment opportunity amidst the vomit? Hoooah!

To be fair, somthing like this was only going to be a matter of time! As previously mentioned there is an extremely prevelant drinking culture within the UK forces in general.....if your going to send the boy's away, they're going to play! Beer............unless your prepared to confine them to base. Frown

We've had Brits in our city on a number of recent occasions. Fine bunch of guys, no different from our servicemen on a 'night off'.

Go back and read the original linked story AND the comments posted there by residents of Medicine Hat Alberta, the closest town to CFB Suffield, where the British Army trains.

The British Army has a permanent establishment at CFB Suffield , and they are NOT the problem. The problem comes from the visting units who are there for a 6 week training period.

The city Police do have combined foot patrols with the British MP's and both are capable of arresting unruly soldiers. The problem is the amount of bodies that are turned loose at one time. As many as 450 soldiers in a town of only 15,000 people can really get rowdy.

Local people have asid that they "stay away " from the downtown area when they hear that the "brits are coming to town ".

Bar owners are in a difficult position. On the one hand they are in busines to make money and the brits do spend a lot. BUT they also have to try to protect their year round customers, and their premisies, from damage and assaults. A fine line to walk.

An added irritant, is the attitude of the Brits o/rs who think that they are "immune to prosecution " in Canada. The main blame, in my opinion, lies within the unit's officer ranks.

The solution? Additional MP patrols and walkabouts by unit Officers with them.

Jim B. Toronto.

In Fort Lauderdale in times past we got lots of British Sailors off the Royal Navy's visiting ships. They filled the bars, got drunk and chased girls who usually wanted to be caught. If they were unruly they could often be glad that there was a British Shore Patrol guy there on the foot patrol with the Fort Lauderdale Police. I guess we liked them better because they didn't live there all the time, and Fort Lauderdale wasn't a small town.
