I don,t think I would want the likes of Gordon Brown,David Milliband or the other fella in charge of defence managing the countries military future.Nor would I wish for the likes of prince charles & co.What does one do when an admiral is sleeping with the queens daughter pocketing £100k a year and stroking the royal mut in relative comfort in the english countryside.

Well seeing as how HM only has one daughter, who is married to an admiral I don't really see what your problem is.

Therefore I do with all due consideration bestow you, Zorx son of the village idiot, with the title of Oxygen Thief.

However I will respect your freedom of speech and also your freedom to protect and cherish your ignorance.

The first sentence of your post was so self evident that the most egregious moron should know it. The middle sentence was rubbish and the final sentence was pure trolling.

Therefore you are both an idiot and an O2 Thief.

Please sod off.

B-burg:--- Does the above post imply that you will not be sending him a birthday card..? Smile

Since the Thread is about the UK Government -(kind of) I'll ask one of you UK folks something. I've noticed that since Brown has become the P.M. that there are new/different faces on the Front Bench with him and it seems that they don't stay around as long as Blair's Front benchers..? yeah, or Nay..?

The other thing that is very obvious is that on the Lib.Dem. Bench, Kennedy used to sit at the end closest to the aisle, then, Campbell, now the new guy who looks like a Movie Star/model dude himself sits about 3 seats down from the end. (The Lib.Dem. Leader),,,why does he not sit where the other leaders did..? If one of you knows.

BTW--- Yaa know,,,, The Thread starter mentioned something that I have noticed (from this side of the Atlantic) over the years, and maybe you Brits have also: The "looking down at" "making fun of" and/or insulting comments towards either the Royals/Nobility/Titled Gentlemen and Ladies for having money/servants/land/heritage/heraldry, etc..

...At the same time, in this country for many years now it seems that we "worship" Show-Biz scum/skunks/drunks/dopers, Pro-Sports jock-itch types that have trouble forming a complete sentence without uttering about 5 "uuhh's" and at least a couple of long gaps of silence. Then there is the really wierd thing of having lofty opinions of people that own companies and have bunches of $$$, and treat their employees like dirt.

Red carpet treatment for people with mega-money over here. At least that's how it looks to this colonist. What do you gents think..?

Maybe I shouldn't comment, saying as I'm not a Brit. Smile

However, I've associated with them long enough to know and understand their sense of humour, for they have refined the art of 'looking down at', 'making fun of' and/or insulting comments' and that it towards their friends and the people they admire. Eek.

The Australians have the same sense of ironic humour.

It is an experience beyond belief to stand at the Mess Bar and listen to the Aussies and the Poms have a go at each other - yet they are the best of mates.

The trick is that they know not to cross that invisible line, particularly where members of the Royal Family are concerned.

The American's in particular cannot understand this ironic sense of humour and I have witnessed on many occasions, even within the Military.com Forums, Americans becoming angry, confused and insulted at what the Brit regarded as a bit of banter or the Australian as a bit of a stir.

Irish Guard:--- Smile It is always good to read your posts/comments here on the site! Matter o' fact, I wish you would post more often. Was thinking about this just the other day, and I've noticed the content and posts have NOT been of the quality that they were, say prior to about 6-8 months ago...hint-hint.

Trench, Fletch-(where is Fletch?),B-burg, RNdeep Diver, and yourself have brains in your cranium(s) and are able to spell and use capital letters, and are able to actually put a thought into a sentence. You also have the advantage of actually been in Uniform (and I don't mean the High School Band) which puts you light years ahead of the silly wabbits that pollute these boards.

On this issue {which you quoted from my post above} , I apologize if I was unclear. What I was speaking/venting about was my viewpoint as an American with lots of Brit blood in the veins, is that many Americans insult/look-down-at/mock those things/people/institutions of Britain, yet we (not me!)seem to exalt the Show Biz/Sports/Business ty****s in our country (most of which have never/would never serve the country) as some lofty forms of humanity...

... Yet, it was HRH Elizabeth II that put on a uniform and helped service Army trucks (lorries) during WW2, and her Dad and Mom would walk around the towns and visit the people that had been Blitzed the night before---instead of hiding out in Ottawa. Her husband (The Duke) served as a Naval Officer, and her sons and now grandsons have served in Uniform!

BTW--- Ireland is a part of the British Isles, so you can be "Brit" for this discussion Irish Guard. Wink Cool

Thats quite a easy question actually!.........Basically members of the house do not have set seats. Its up to them where-ever they sit, aslong its within the seats designated to the party- funadamentally the prime-minister could go and sit in the very back row if he wanted, but it would'nt be very practicle.

Interestingly enough....i read with interest the comments about various the british tendancy to insult those close to you/fellow members of your mess;- when i got rated up to PO that was one of the things that was hammered home which isn't acceptable in the senior rates mess, no longer am i allowed to walk into the mess and exclaim 'morning ??????' (add your own expletives!)

Swremwin- i get what you mean about people worshipping the ground that the likes of Paris Hilton walk on.....in my own eyes, most of them are a waste of skin- they would not know hard graft even if they walked straight into it!

I'm not either, just a silly Yank who lives near the Canadian border and is a member of the Air Force Association of Canada.

I have a good friend in Canada who is a transplanted Brit. He's been there since 1962, yet he refuses to take out Canadian citizenship. He says, "I was born loyal to the Queen, why the hell should I have to take an oath of loyalty when it's my birthright?"

He's hilarious. The vast majority of the time I "get" his jokes (mostly insults directed at me).

Aussies are the salt of the earth.

How does that work with Australians who are pro-republic? Isn't that a fairly contentious issue in Australia right now?

Yes, my countrymen are too easily insulted; we're not called the Excited States of America for nothing.

I'm not that easily offended, though...when an Aussie directs "b**tard" at me or my Brit friend in Canada tells me he doesn't like me because I don't respond to his insults I know they're just having a bit of fun.

Good post Grenzer and thanks for putting your perspective on it.

In so far as an Australian Republic is concerned, it's a long way off, the Aussies are more worried their sport and whether or not the Poms or the All Blacks are going to beat them at Rugby or whether or not they can keep The Ashes away from the Poms.

In any case, no matter whether an Australian was a republican or a monachist, neither of them would seriously insult the Royal Family especially HM Queen Elizabeth.

Here is a similar discussion we had,

Cheers.
