First, I apologize if this should be posted elsewhere, but it seemed the best place to do so, and the symptoms of PTSD and depression have a fair share of overlap, so maybe someone can give me some insight.
First, I'll *try* to make my backstory brief. I was in the Army Reserve for six years, and am currently in the IRR. Toward the end of my period of actively drilling, I had been self-admitted to the hospital for suicidal ideation (I was not committed by a court order, or anything like that). My chain of command knew about this, and to their credit, did not treat me like a leper, and were supportive. I enrolled with the VA, and ended up being diagnosed with depression. I had thought about re-enlisting, but had decided to that I needed to square myself away. Anyway, during this whole time, and to the present, I have been worried that I might end up with a medical discharge before my IRR period is up. This is especially the case since I had attended an IRR muster (not a deployment; it's to keep records up to date and such). I had to fill out a questionnaire, and it had asked questions about certain behaviors, such as trouble sleeping, feelings of hopelessness, etc. I was hesitant, but I decided to answer it truthfully, and added in the comments section that I was being treated by the VA. I only have ten months left in the IRR, and am afraid that this might cause them to give me a medical discharge, although I'm not sure if depression is considered a "personality disorder". Also, if I get called for deployment, and this issue comes up in the pre-deployment process, will they tell me I can't go and just kick me out on the spot? Also, I am not trying to fake this to get out of a deployment, or anything like that. In fact, when I went to the IRR muster, I learned that IRR soldiers are given the offer to continue drilling during their IRR period, which would also come with a 24 month non-deployability status (Basically, the full IRR period for Guard/Reservists), but I declined that offer. |
