I would have preferred Sir Admiral Andrew Cunningham or Field Marshal Montgomery.

Nelson is the greatest British military hero of all time, according to a survey which placed him above Montgomery and Wellington...

:: Britain's greatest military heroes - according to the ComRes poll - are:

1. Admiral Lord (Horatio) Nelson - 27% (44% among age group 18-24)
2. Field-Marshal the Viscount Montgomery - 19%
3. The Duke of Wellington - 11%
4. Richard the Lionheart - 8%
5. Sir Arthur 'Bomber' Harris - 3%
6. King Henry V - 2%
7. Lord Kitchener - 2%
8. Colonel 'H' Jones - 2%

Montgomery second?

El Alamein wasn't even his battle plan, it was Alexanders.

I'd also vote for Nelson as the best Admiral of all time, or at least the one all others are compared to. Togo is called 'the Japanese Nelson' and Mahan or Nimitz should be the 'American Nelson.'
Anyway I'd put him at the top of the list but I don't know what is exceptional about Montgomery that would put him above Marlborough, Wellington, Drake, Wolfe, or Gordon.

Sad to see Ricky Cat'sLights in there at the expense of Marlborough or Slim. And if you're going to mention Henry V what about the Black Prince or Edwards I and III.
