I was with the 41st CSH in Honduras from Sep 83 to April 84. I was part of the augmentation personnel, I was assigned to the Pharmacy at BAMC. BAMC received orders to provide one 91Q(Pharmacy Specialist) in the rank of SSG. Because of my last name was Garcia and I speak Spanish, and I was the only one, I figured that I would be the one chosen, I volunteered. It wasn't too bad it could get a little boring. I did go quite a few MEDCAPS to villages out in the boonies. We had to live in tents(GP mediums) for the first few months, but eventually we moved into hooches(huts). Overall it was an interesting experience.
I do not know if this will apply or not. I was in Honduras in 1987 as a part of Operation Solid Shield. I recall we were just a stones throw from the border. We were their doing military exersises ( show of force ) A young Lcpl in the Jungle.
I worked with a guy a SSg at Ft Carson his nephew was one of the frist troop to be killed by Ambush there. He was gone soon after never know what happend to him. He was also Spanish speaking from what I can remember he told me his nephew was to.there was a lot of troops that wonted to go but only if you were Spanish speaking went frist. I never got to go.
187th Infantry Regiment (101st Air Assault) deployed there in 1986 via a Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise (EDRE). I was bedridden with a leg infection so I had to stay behind. That Deployment was only 4-6 weeks though.
Things dont change. Glad to see the security is still up. But this was a place where nothing happened. And nobody was there, even as early as 1981. Where there is trouble we will always be there.
My detachment flew into Tegucigalpa on a COPA chartered 727 from Panama and from there to the CREM center at Colon. A little orientation and some jumps with the local troops and it was off to sunny El Salvador!
Do any of you great people know anything about the war in Nicaragua in the late 70's I lost my family San Carlos rio San Juan. I just don't seem to remember details,I was too young.
