i was just curious as to why Port Security was reserve only, and why not active?

Thank you for any help.

Because it is, and has been for a very long time.

Call it a throwback rating from the Cold War era. There for surge ops, should they be needed.

Any further questions?

Former PS sends.

Well i am just curious as to who boards the ships far out in the ocean or deep into the oceans of US Territory. (For drug enforcement, weapons, etc.)

Those are PS, and if so how does one get to do a cutter tour?

Lastly,

are there any jobs for the CG That resemble Law enforcement other then PS?

To my knowledge there are absolutely no PS's assigned to any deep water cutters.

PS's work at PSU's, MSU's and small boat stations. PS's are a reserve force, not active duty.

Active duty folks are assigned to cutters. As MarineBM said above, BM's, MK's, GM's, DC's and other ratings conduct law enforcement aboard cutters, at TACLETS, at LEDETS, and at MSST's.

Law Enforcement is a collateral duty in the Coast Guard. There is no rating that does it all of the time.

ok, thanks.

My last question is regarding Jump School. I know Airforce, Marines, Army & Navy can go to a Jump School and get certified in Airborne, is that the same for coast guard or no?

The CG would be more apt to sending folks to Air Assault School to learn rappelling than Airborne Jump School.

IMO.

I live in Miami and I'm interested in joining as a PS.

I'm not sure if Miami, FT Lauderdale, or Key West have a PSU, not sure of a MSU either...

What would a PS do at a small boat station if I was able to go to one?

PSU 307 is in St. Pete.

The are Sector Prevention departments at Miami and Jax, and stations pretty much everywhere.

A PS at a station is expected to get qualled and get underway. BTM, BO, maybe even coxswain.

Talk to a recruiter. 1-800-GET USCG or gocoastguard.com

I think thats the draw back from being in the USCG. If we dedicated a rate for full time LEO we wouldn’t be have to play catch up with our counterparts, it would have been a steady progression even with the new missions under DHS. It would also facilitate transitions to other careers within other LE organizations. LE as collateral brings in a lot of members that don’t want to do the job but are tasked to do so. It’s not collateral if you’re at a MSST, Ledet, Taclet, Sector Response, Stations or when I did it while at IMLET or those that were lucky to do it with DIAT. I’m all for having the LE rate, why not convert the PS rate into active duty? I always had that question.

See the PS Force Rating notes for a little "clue" on that conversion question.
