All depends on where you are assigned.

You are not going to receive that kind of training unless you are assigned to an MSST or the MSRT.

Wow, when did that change?

As a PS at two different PSU's, I had the opportunity to attend the Combat Skills Course at Quantico and train with Force Recon Marines, train with Army Rangers at Camp Perry, and attend the FBI SWAT School at Great Lakes.

PSU's don't do this type of training anymore?

Jerry,

Weps Quals: 9mm, M16/M4/M203/M240/.50Cal/MK 19.
PSU basic. USMC MOUT, which includes CQB, BO/BTM, Convoy ops/Ambush/IEDs etc.

Just like you thought. MSST/MSRT aren't the only ones who get the training. We are sending people to schools all the time.

The only thing sensitive about the PS rating occurs when personal gains get in the way of unit integrity and our core values.

There are no politics in the PS rate...just hard working people trying to do what they can to properly protect the public, and each other.

Operators don't have time for political agendas.

See this confuses me. Some guys are saying "little at best" others are talking training with Recon, Rangers, and FBI Swat! Wow thats a big difference.

BTDT Mentions an arsenal of weapons, almost made me bolt out the door to Tampa to find a recruiter =)

Not sure about the high end tactical training. The PS's might be going and not telling me about it. The PS's do fire the USCG Practical/Combat Courses of fire (at my PSU). Not as much as they would like I am sure but there is only so much time in the day.

And of course if you really want/need to be tactical you can Join the Marines or Army Infantry for that matter.

My 2cents or less

The members of the PSU qual on all the weapons I listed. SECDIV keeps current, the rest as needed. BOATS has personnel who fire the 240, .50, M4, 9mm, A/P grenades, 203, etc. If you're not doing this at your PSU, you are WAAAY behind the required training curve.

All personnel, at least at 312, are allowed to put in for schools. What some forget, is that SECDIV and BOATS must cross train in order to ensure that security requirements are met.

Look in the PSU quals book. All members have to get the basics signed off.

BTDT

Sir, thank you for the great info. If you wouldn't mind me asking, could you tell me a couple examples of what kind of schools a PSU member could apply for? Im just curious as to if they are CG specific, or do they include the other services?

I wonder if they would ever have PSUs train with other heavily armed boat units like Navy SWCC? Or Navy RIVRON Unit? Just seems like they have some things in common. Do these units work together or even see each other at all in Iraq? I always wondered about this.

Thank you in advance.

Lawman,

You can put in for any school that is rate related:

Example: PS - PS A school, BTM school, BO school, PSU Basic Skills (all go through), CQB, MOUT, HMMV Driver, USMC Machine Gun School, USAF Load Planner, just to name a few.

BM/MK: A school, PSU Basic, Tactical Coxswain, USAF Load Planner, BTM/BO school, etc.

These are just some of the courses we have sent members to. There are more out there.
