I am a police officer in nj and was interested in the PS position but I was informed that no such position is open in this area. I have found that RI has positions open but I was told by a recruiter there that I do not qualify because the distance is over 100 miles. Friends in the CG have told me however that this is not true. Does anyone have any suggestions because it is getting extremely frustrating as the recruiters I have spoken to could not give any further advice. I have ademently expressed that the 2 1/2 hour ride is not a problem for me. Thanks in advance for any responses.
The distance issue is a very strict rule for accessions. A lot of folks may say and even believe it is OK for them, but we believe it is an inappropriate burden for new Coasties. In the example numbers you use, it also gets to be a potential safety concern. When your travel time is taken into account, we would be looking at a bare minimum 14 hour 'work day' for you twice a month.
Now - for the semi good news, be patient. In about 7 months, there will be NO PS positions anywhere in the CG. Positions will be changed to another rating, most of them ME and possibly reorganized some. Once that happens, there may be better news for you in your area.
Kind of hoping for better news. Thank you for the information it was helpful. Would you suggest checking the coast guard website periodically for future openings then?
