I was reading the postings here and with so much information I became a little lost. I’m was hoping if you could answer some questions I have. Since viewing the Port Security Career at the Coast guard web site I became fascinated with it. I am conserving joining after a I complete my academy (For becoming a police officer). But I had many questions to make sure everything is in place. I greatly thank everyone who responses!

1 What is the main function of PS?

2. What’s a daily event like?

3. I live near Los Angeles? Likelyhood of working at Port of Los Angeles?

4 I have seen many different types of names like PSU, DOG, MSST, NCWS, ect…..what are these and is it part of PS. (And how do you get in?)

5. Deployable?(outside the U.S.) If so How or When it could happen? How long?

6. Is it a guaranteed job? ( It was the only career that really light the fire to join and I can only see this as something I would love).

7. How long in total (Boot camp plus schooling or training) before becoming a PS?

8. Was it or Is it worth it? (Would you do it again? Do love it, hate it, or would change it….ect)

I know it many questions but I would greatly thank you for your help! -Armando

1 What is the main function of PS?

Depends on the unit..

2. What’s a daily event like?

Depends on the unit.

3. I live near Los Angeles? Likelyhood of working at Port of Los Angeles?

Depends on billet availability.

4 I have seen many different types of names like PSU, DOG, MSST, NCWS, ect…..what are these and is it part of PS. (And how do you get in?)

PS's are part of those units. The jobs are similar with those units. You are assigned to those units.

5. Deployable?(outside the U.S.) If so How or When it could happen? How long?

Yes. Have been deployed as a PS, six months, coupla months, over a year domestically. It goes with the rating. Frequently.

6. Is it a guaranteed job? ( It was the only career that really light the fire to join and I can only see this as something I would love).

Guaranteed to do what?

7. How long in total (Boot camp plus schooling or training) before becoming a PS?

Ask a recruiter. I was a legacy PS who never went to PS A School (former Army MP).

8. Was it or Is it worth it? (Would you do it again? Do love it, hate it, or would change it….ect)

Yes. It had its moments, but no regrets.

I know it many questions but I would greatly thank you for your help! -Armando

The are a coupla routes you can take. Enlist as a non-rate, go to Boot Camp, graduate, then put in for PS "A" School, graduate, and become a PS3.

OR

Get some LE time under your belt and request to enlist Direct Petty Officer, go to REBI (Reserve Enlisted Basic Indoctrination), a two-week school, graduate, and be a PS3. The more you have in your packet (LE schools, college degrees, etc.) the better your chance of going the Direct Petty Officer route.

I spent my time overseas with PSU's guarding foreign ports as both MARSEC (Maritime Security) and boat crew (TPSB "Raider" boats)

Don't forget, PS's can also be assigned to Marine Safety Units and Small Boat Stations.

Do a little reading: PS

Good luck!

And any rate can be assigned to do other jobs as needed. Flexible is the key.

Can you give an example? (I wondering if you go from a PS to a cook because they are needed or are you assigned a job close to your MOS)

Thank you both very much for the time! The more I read the more I want to join!

Once you are rated, that is your rating unless you put in for a lateral transfer to another rating. With that said, an MK can be a boarding officer or a coxswain, a BM can be a Small Arms Instructor, an FS can do LE.

It's called "Semper Gumby - Always Flexible".

You have your primary job, but can be called upon to do a LOT of collaterals. The more qual codes you acquire, the better.

PSU's don't have "SWAT". SWAT is reactive to a situation. PSU's have MARSEC teams which are proactive, show-of-force type teams for protecting assets at foreign ports.

Historically, MARSEC Teams have received training from Force Recon Marines, Army Rangers, and at the FBI SWAT School in the early to mid-'90's. Team tactics is the key.

I see what you mean! I think that’s cool that you move around but still do the same job description. Keeps you doing different things and learning new ways. Best of all meet new people. So would you believe PS is a good place for a Law Enforcement person joining the coast guard?
