Basic Training |
I've posted a few questions on here and I have gotten good info. There is something I've been meaning to ask and I just keep forgetting. What is the deployment rate for PS's not in PSUs or MSSTs. I got the general idea for both PSUs and MSSTs but it's my understanding I would have to eventually work in a MSO. Do PS's deploy out of MSOs? And if so is there a cycle or do they just snatch you and send you to support NCW ops or the like?
I'm not asking for fear of deployment. I'm a MA and currently in Afghanistan now. I'm just wondering if there is some sort of rotation so I can sit my family down and explain what is to be expected. Once I get back stateside I'm planning on joining the USCGR and PS is what I'm looking at. |

The current ideology of the use of reservist in the Coast Guard is to have people ready to deploy at any time for any mission. That said, it doesn't exclude the need to have the proper training to perform specific missions, but as a reservist, if you have a special qual code or training, you theoreticaly can be used for that job at any time without warning, and get sent anywhere in the world under Title 10 or Title 14 orders. This occured for both the 911 attacks, and huricanes Rita & Katrina.

Hey Dirty I too was considering PSUs. I don't think any service has "set" deployments =(
"the proper training to perform specific missions," Thanks for the info coastiebrian. I myself been trying to figure out what exactly that training IS for the past few months with little success. I have posted on forums, searched the web and spoken to recruiters. Apart from Force Protection and riding around on boats I havn't gotten any sure answers in terms to what "training" is available. CQB? MOUT training? Sniper Training? Donut Baking? Basket Weaving? I don't understand the need to be so cl***ified when the other branches lay it out there - but then again, im just some dirty civilian I do know im not signing up for 8 years for a job they won't fully explain to me. Some people act like its no big deal, just sign, then you'll figure it out. I don't think so - 8 years is a serious commitment. The Coast Guard itself is an outstanding and brave service branch. Some of the rescues the CG does are just unbelivable, they are true heros. Wish it was for me, but I dont think so. |

Being a "This Member" makes people hesitant to answer questions on an open Internet forum. Considering adding info to your profile. With that said, you need to reengage with your Recruiter, as the PS rating will become the LE/S (Law Enforcement/Security) rating within the next two years. |

JerryG is right...better to be safe with security. However, a lot of misinformation, or lack there of is because of the lack of "PS" types in recruiting. What job/quals you will have will vastly depend on the type of unit you get assigned to. If your thinking of signing on the dotted line, the recruiter will already have a billet/unit you will be assigned to (they fill positions available from a list). The best thing you could do is visit the unit prior to joining, and see for yourself. If you decide to go "PS", it's best to check out PSU, MSU, and MSST job descriptions and duties.
