Thats the old girl.

That chopper is from the USS America and was transfering wounded back to the carrier. Most of them who were severly wounded were later transfered to other hospitals in Europe before being flown back to the states.

I didn't know this picture existed until a few years back. Seems like a lot of pictures about that attack have been comeing to light the last few years. We were all told no pictures or the camera and film would be confiscated. Naturally, being sailors, we ignored that rule. One of the best collections belonged to our Captain, Robert Hilton RADM Ret. now deceased.

What you realy don't see in this picture is the torpedo hole, the top of which is just under the davit foward of the bridge on the side faceing you. It went from the keel to just above the water line. That space was where 24 of the men killed were working when the torpedo hit.

If your interested you can go to www.ussliberty.org where there's an extensive collection includeing when the Davis was alongside the Liberty.

A couple of points here Oddball.

There were two carriers with the sixth fleet at the time, the America and Saratoga. Only one launched aircraft in support of the Liberty and that was the Saratoga and she launched two flights. At the time of the first launch nobody knew who was attacking, only that it was an American ship on the recieving end and whoever was doing it was the target of the fighters being launched.

Now remember this was in the sixties and the cold war was in full swing. The ready fighters on the carriers supposedly were nuclear armed and were recalled. They then went through the evolution of changing over to conventional weapons and were launched again. This comsumed quite a lot of time and is something to keep in mind.

While this second flight was enroute the Israelies contacted the White House and informed them
that it was the Israelie forces who attacked the Liberty and thats when the second flight was recalled by MacNamara. The words used were "to get those god damned planes ondeck now". He denies any knowlege of that.

Now for a couple of points.

The attacking aicraft had no markings indicating what was their country of origin and no one knew until Israel contacted the White House. The Liberty's radio antennas were the first things knocked out so they couldn't call for help.

The attack lasted approximatly 70 minutes. First the ship was hit by jets with rockets and bombs, includeing nalpom (sp). Then it was straffed by cannon fire.

After that three PT boats that had been watched on the Liberty's radar for quite a while launched a torpedo attack. The number of torps launched has been estimated to be as high as five but only one hit the ship. After the torpedo hit the pt boats circled the ship shooting at anyone ondeck and sinking liferafts that had been launched.

Sometime dureing the PT boat attack the Liberty mannaged to repair a severed antenna connection and got a message out to any station that they were under attack. That message was sent over the SECTAC frequency for the sixth fleet. We heard that one. The Saratoga acknowleged the message and told them "Help is on the Way". At that point the attack stopped.

Total time under attack, seventy minutes. 36 men killed, 171 wounded out of a crew of 298.
