Am writing a submarine cookbook. Unable to locate menus or examples of food served aboard during WWI.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Nancy Sister of Submariner, "Tomahawker" |

Nancy,
I was not on a submarine, nor was I in during WWI. I am, however interested in Military food, and specifically Navy food. I have some Navy and a good number of Army books on the subject. I have an Army book from the WWI era, but I think that is about all I have. I'll look around and see what I can find, and try to scan a few things from the one I have. John |

Here is a sample menu from a 1916 Army cooks manual. This is probably similar to the Navy fare.
I'm still looking for more info. |

So appreciate your research. At a quick glance, noticed that, unlike on today's submarines and surface ships, menu lacking homemade pastries, bread, rolls, etc. Also, see no salads, fresh fruit/vegetables. Of course, today's submarines run out of these after a few weeks. Note the old custom of lunch being called dinner as main meal of day. Look forward to other info you can find. Possibility I can acknowledge you in submarine cookbook. Nancy Sister of Submariner, "Tomahawker" |
