I'm a military Gran-brat x2! My parents were not in the military but both of my Grandfathers served.

My Mother's Father was in the ARMY and my Father's Father was in the NAVY.

I am trying to research my Father's Father's insignia. All I seem to be able to get from my Father is "He was the Captain's Telephone Talker on a "Tin Can" (destroyer) at the last part of WWII. He relayed the Captain's orders to the different divisions on the ship. Like "Man the forward torpedo tubes!" Dad would then say into the intercom "Man forward torpedo tubes!" etc...." (I apologize for the wording it's copied from an email I got from my Father).

I wasn't sure where to post this..if anyone has any insight into this I would greatly appreciate it. I am still researching what my other Grandfather did in the ARMY. I will give new information as I receive it (unfortunately I have to go through my father as I am not sure how much information my Grandfather has retained over the years regarding his service).

I am very proud of the service my Grandfathers gave to keep this country free and am planning a tattoo to honor them (neither of them were tattoo types).

Thanks for your patience and taking the time to help!

he was probably a quartermaster or a boatswain mate, giving orders over the 1MC.

Being a "Captain's Telephone Talker" could have been just about any rating. Generally, those postions were manned during General Quarters and most often by either Supply types or Admin types.

Any information on his day to day job would be helpful. If he is still alive, you could ask him. If he is deceased, you could obtain a copy of his service record from the archives in St. Louis.
Any other information you could provide would help. Do you have any old pictures, or any of the insignia he may have worn?

No I don't know anything....I am going through my father as he recalls more about my Grandfather's service than my Grandfather does...If I knew the insignia I wouldn't have a problem hehe.

Any old photos in dress uniform , preferably the blue " crackerjack" uniform.

Look on the right or left upper arm. Is there an insignia of an eagle, above a small symbol, with a number of V chevrons below the small symbol. That would indicate a petty officer, what grade & specialty.

Look on the right or left shoulder for a stripe going around the shoulder. Right would indicate a seaman & left would indicate a fireman.

Might give you a place to start.
