Over on the main topic board they are having a helluva "go around" (a Navy term) on uniforms. As the History, Traditions side, how about we get to throwing out as much uniform trivia as the gang can recall. Might be nice to have a spot to accumulate this stuff.
MMCS (SS) throws out tidbits that should be captured, and kept over here also. Maybe the semi geezers hanging around here can help out. The Blue Jumper - originally referred to as the "overshirt" . During WW2 a major alteration to the design was made. The length of the jumper was shortened about 3" and the lacing around the base was eliminated. The lacing was there to "blouse" the jumper at the waistband of the trousers. Saved a load of material. |

TMC moves the Master Chief's post here when they move down on the main General forum so we don't loose them. Unfortunatly over the years with auto prune we lost quite a few. Now we do the prunning by hand so we don't touch this forum.
USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

Is that where we keep seeing the "BUMP'" every now and again ??
If so, will start also giving them a nudge to keep current. |

Yup. The only things that get pruned now are the "my bunions hurt" posts if you get my drift.
Anything with some good solid information that can help someones research stays. USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

The "FLAT HAT" or blue cap.
Found that it was eliminated from the seabag on 1 April 1963. Purportedly to the difficulty in obtaining the material to make the thing. As far as the Coast Guard went, it was worn with service dress "A" , and the white hat was worn with service dress "B". In 1941 the cap talley was changed from displaying the name of the ship the sailor was attached to. For upcoming security, it just read U.S.NAVY or U.S. COAST GUARD. The design appears to have been given a little more flair in the 1920s. Instead of being flat and round, the front was pushed up and a bit of flair given to the shape. |

This must be a Navy tradition, like the white hat. Except for drill teams, or ceremonial units, no two white hats are alike. Some round, some square, some rolled, some folded over, etc. When I went in in '62, we were issued the flat hat, but never wore it. I never saw service dress "A". Had to have it for seabag inspection though. |

The top photo with the officers ' fore and aft' hat and the dress frock coat uniform. Read that outfit was done away with right at the beginning of WW2. Officers also weren't required to have swords, and were urged to turn them in for scrap. Sometimes that hat is referred to as a chapeau.
The "Fuller Brush" devices on the shoulders are truely Epaulettes. Through lack of use, the straps on shirts, soft shoulder boards, etc, are now called epaulettes. The hard shoulder boards correctly are "shoulder marks" For the grass skirt, I guess we rule out Greenland as the island port call Pretty good photo showing how the blue jumper was bloused prior to WW2. The flat hat with the ship name, and right arm "seamans branch" rating badge. |

I didn't know there was a name for it. That decorative stitching that binds the corners of the pocket on the jumper.

How about Chiefs and DUNGAREES. I can find photos up to the late 1950s showing CPOs in dungarees. Anyone have a time frame when they were done away with ??

The right arm rates lasted through WWII. There was also A Gray chief rank. They wore Gray uniforms with Black crow's and stripes. My oldest brother was one. At the end of war He reverted to 1st Class P.O.

We were in at the same time. (60-63)I went from Bell Bottoms to balloon Bottoms (straight leg pants) Flat hat to no flat hat. I had a set of Dress Blues made in Hong Kong. Cost me $15.00. I thought I had spent a fortune. They had a 30 in. waist and 20in. Bells. Patent Leather Dress Shoes and a rayon White Hat. Looked good. Nonregulation. Had to send them home |

Now then, one for the CPO to chew on for a bit.
In particular CPO dress whites. Up until 1975 CPO dress and full dress whites consisted of a blouse, much like the service dress blue, except 8 buttons and it was a lightweight unlined cotton twill. Blue rating badge and hashmarks. Have just found a small item from the Coast Guard Reserves that in 1970 the USN had authorized a change in design to the white blouse to look like the khaki blouse. The choker white that the USN CPO now wears is an officers uniform and it is a bit of a surprise that any self respecting chief would be caught in such regalia. With the USN looking to re-instate the service dress khaki, would the USN CPOs be interested in restoring a CPO uniform rather than a second hand officer uniform ??? |

OLDAO I lost a pair of patent leather shoes made in Hong Kong by No Squeeke Young. They were sharp and I was breaking them in on the Mid watch on the Coral Sea and one of the MAA's Visited the bridge and they left with him. Those things happened. Westpac Willie
