My personal favorite closed base is Naval Station Long Beach. My brother was station there on the USS Paul Foster from 1993 until the base closed. Long Beach was my first introduction to the Navy, as a kid I remember thinking the ships were bigger than our house.

Navcomsta Balboa 65-66. Back when overseas bases had the bar in the barracks, civilian cooks and houseboys. Saturday afternoons at the bullfights and an olympic size pool.

USS Liberty, Never Forget.

I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist.

Argue I have several Treasure Island was where I made a pass at the 27wk ET School and got thru 6wks set back 2wks and went out to the Coral Sea which had just returned from WestPac in 61 May. I liked the liberty on the pike at Long Beach which is long gone and National City Libs were great sailor wise, gone. Hunters Pt was a strange place to go on libs from way out of the way. And last but not least Subic Bay Nav Sta made one hell of an impression on a young dumb 19 yr old who was able to get it all and then found nowhere else had liberty that liberal. I'll drink to that Beer Food for thought WestPac

I kind of liked the Key West Sonar School base. The island was a world of its own then. Course not too much different now.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard

I was commissioned there and it was stepped in history. The Club had great WWII murals.

All the bars and clubs were 10 minute drive.
Atlantic city was an hour away.
Home was 2 hours away.
Good food all over.
1 ship at the base so gyjm etc was never overcrowded.

Philly - absolutely for all the reasons you mentioned.

When I took my Nurse Corps commission, my recruiter apoligized for sending me to NRMC Philadelphia. I said "Are you kidding??? This is a GREAT assignment for a single guy!!!"

You had the Vet and the spectrum right outside the base, great cheesesteaks down on Oregon Ave, and all the entertainment you could want. "Backwater of the Navy???" Boy did he get THAT wrong!!!

I drove through Orlando and Charleston right after closing. A real bummer. A real heart breaker seeing all the wasted infrastructure.

Subic/Cubi Point. Centerville Beach Naval Station (never stationed there but my Father-in-law was and loved it so much he remained in the area after retiring).

Orlando is certainly not wasted anymore. It's a housing development. I've seen photo's of the area now and I have a real hard time recognizing anything of the old base. It's just not there anymore.

I passed by George AFB a few years back. The airfield is still in use as a civilian logistical field. Base housing was still there, but it was all boarded up.

Chief, I believe there is still a small Navy Exchange and Mini Mart in Orlando, but not on the old base property.
