I was visiting my grandfather's grave site today and have always wondered what the ATC part of ATC US Navy meant on his head stone. I always assumed it meant Air Traffic Control, or something Air related, since he flew in zeppelins, and was transferred to other duties after being injured in the attacks on Pearl Harbor. But I always questioned if it meant something else, like perhaps the C part of ATC had something to do with being a Chief. If anyone knows, I'd sure appreciate a solid answer. Thanks.

If it helps, he was in the Navy from 1940 - 1968 (when he died).

Thank you.

ATC would stand for Aviation Electronics Technician Chief.
You are correct that he was a Chief Petty Officer (e-7). And he would have worked on electronic equipment used in planes.
When he first went in (1940) he was probably in a different job, as I don't think AT was used then.

Thanks, TinkFixer! Really appreciate the info.

If I wanted to get a copy of his service record, how would I go about doing that? I've always been curious to have a look at his official files/record. From what I understand, his time in the pacific during WWII was very eventful.

During WW2 the rating was Aviation Radio Technician. The name was changed to Aviation Electronics Technician about 1947.

I can't do a link, but if you copy, and paste

into your browser or google (without the " ") you will see how to get his records.

While the US called them airships the USS Shenandoah (our first) was a copy of a German
Zeppelin forced down and captured in WW-1.
ZR-3 USS Los Angeles (our second) was actualy built by the Germans in the Zeppelin factory and given to the US as part of a reperation payment.
