CCTI, I have yet to be contacted to see if I was even interested in going through. Which after all I have read so far it's not what I was looking forward too from the days of long ago. Maybe there is still some value to it. I guess I will find out when and if someone ever contacts me for the whole CCTI process.

DMCatahoula,
Maybe you should read the link to the essay posted by B12; it answers the question of "why?" with a well-spun "because". Then again I may not have gotten the whole message, I am only at a LORAN. MKdel |

My first suggestion would be to advance to E-7. It would make it much more likely that someone would contact you about CCTI. Once you do that, then YOU contact your Chief of the Mess, before they contact you. |

I will advance to E-7 within the next few months, (hopefully the 1st of Sept) this is why I had figured someone would have contacted me by now. Thanks for your advice and do you have a choice as to where you want to go through the CCTI or just your local area.

Talk with your COTM (Chief of the Mess). Of course it is your choice whether or not to go through it. Where may be a little touchy, depends upon the mess. Although most messes run a fairly identical process, there are some regional tinges. Now, you are in a 'special' circumstance becuase of where you are. How many Chiefs are at your unit? Are there more than 3 (including yourself) within 800 miles even?
The advancement will probably mean PCS and in your case, you may be better off doing it then. Feel free to give me at shout at work anytime if you want to talk one on one! |

Master Chief
No Chiefs in the area besides my OIC which he just made E-7 and has not been through the CCTI. The Unit nearby is Omaha Ne. which is about a 10 hr drive. The Mess for the area is Sector Upper Miss and its in St. Louis, Mo. and its about a 18- 20 hr drive. I appreciate your advice and help. Thanks DMCATAHOULA |

This newer ritual seems to be quite a task.
The old time CPO initiation was a fairly swift occurance, usually within a week or two of being advanced. That was the time frame when the shock, surprise, and wonder hadn't yet worn off, and the entry into the CPO quarters, the change of uniform, was still fresh in your mind. Going through the event today, especially after having been a Chief for 6 or more months sure looses something in the translation. It had the most impact when you were first advanced. I probably knew and sailed with a few chiefs that were advanced at a remote location and never had an initiation. When the showed up later they had been doing the job and the process didn't hold anything for them. One gent took the JOOD during the day so that all the chiefs aboard could attend. I kind of sense a bit of elitism trying to be connected with todays ritual. Have heard a few times the term "Prospective Chief Petty Officer". Was not aware there was such a grade. Also the term E-7 vs chief. Unless the certificate from the commandant has changed, it read a .... appointed Chief Quartermaster... not E-7. If it is a twice a year event, I can see how it wouldn't hold much meaning for someone, after having been a chief for 6 months. May be different event for the present time folks. The above is just an old time observation. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mastersmate, |

MM;
PCPO is a term whose use is restricted to only initiated Chief's. To all others, they are Chiefs, not E-7s and not PCPOs. The process has changed a lot. Some things for the better and some maybe not. The primary lessons are still there. A lot of planning and preperation goes in to the CCTI. Although many places hold them twice a year, that is not required. The COTM may hold a CCTI whenever they see fit. Many see a distinct advantage to having multiple Chief's go through it at one time. I would say that is the primary reason why it is not done right away. MK1; Hang in there and best of luck. You (and the OinC) can shout at any time for further guidance. That is what the mess is al about. |
