I was wondering how one might go about becoming an MU. I mean, there's no 'A' school, obviously... I've never heard of any tryouts or auditions, and my recruiter didn't have any info on it. What is required? What do I have to know? is there sign offs? Who do I contact? ok, that's enough questions for one thread. Any info at all would be appriciated. Thanks!

I know this is an old thread, but someone might read it anyway.
Auditions for the Band only occur when there is a vacancy (usually retirement) MU's in the USCG only exist in New london, so once you join the Band, you don't have to leave the CGA until you get out. You are right...there is no A school. The audition process guarantees that we are getting the most highly qualified applicants. Not to sound demeaning, but being 1st chair in a high school band will not get you a job here. 95% of our members have a college music degree, many have Master's, and few have Doctorate's. They are real professionals, just like BM's are real sailors, MK's are superior mechanics, and helo pilots are expert aviators. Audition (if there is an opening)info can be found on our website: www.uscg.mil/band. The music asked at an audition varies for each instrument, but a solo and standard orchestral excerpts are the norm. The website has alot of other good info too like history, upcoming concerts, player bios, etc. When someone wins an audition, they would go to their local recruiter and signup like anyone else. The band is awesome. If you get a chance, check us out! |
