My grandfather was the Top in the 56th Signal Battalion, V Corps, and he said he was never, ever colder, before or since (until his death on Memorial Day, 1998) than when he was in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge.
Yeah my grandfather was there too,, and said they nearly froze there. Said they just weren't equipt for that kind of cold. He found a dead German and took his coat to keep warm, he had, had his elbow blown off, and was trying to do what he could to stay warm. His last name being Vogelin(german) didn't help matters. When they found my grandfather passed out from blood loss wearing a german coat last name Vogelin, they at quick glance took him to be German. When they got to the MASH unit, they put him in with the POW's. Americans get treatment first, then POW's. When they finally got to the POW's, and to him, they opened his coat and realized then, he was an American soldier. He lost his elbow, had to have it fused. It sucked back then,, but it was a part of his life that made for a great story. HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED AND ARE SERVING. BLESS YOU ALL

Jayhawk; The battle of the bulge was fought on the German, Belgian border.. It was fought on the Schnee Eiffel in the Ardeness. The front line was in Belgium looking down into Germany. Along with patrols from both sides,we penetrated each others lines all the time. Since I was there at that time I know the whole story. Since I am new here, and am not sure how to navigate this site, I will wait to see if you get this.
