Yes, my name is Mike Jimenez and I'm just about to leave for OSUT training at Ft. Knox, KY. Yet, that is not the purpose of this article....

I am looking for an old photo of my granfather that appeared on the front page of a newspaper during the Korean War era(1950-1953). I have no knowledge of the name of the newspaper that took the shot but I can tell you that it was taken in San Francisco, CA during a famous march/rally for the first soldiers returning from Korea. I'll explain my grandfathers story for more information......

My granfather's name is Ignacio Sandoval and he is from Blythe, CA. He served in the U.S. Army and was sent to fight in the Korean War. My grandfather was one of the first soldiers to arrive in North Korea because he was in the 1st Cavalry/1st Infantry Unit. He started out as Pvt.(not knowing what class of Private) but then became a Sergeant 1st Class(SFC.). This is what I know of his story over in Korea.
He was sent to the front lines to fight and engage against the Korean insurgents but while fighting in combat one day, a grenade landed near him and exploded. Bits and pieces of the grenade flew into my grandfathers leg causing him to be disabled and limited his walking for the rest of his life. My grandfather was awarded the Purple Heart for this incident.
With his disability, my grandfather was one of the first U.S. troops to come back to the United States since the beginning of the war. He then was departured to San Francisco, CA to start his journey on back home. With this being a very special event, there was a huge march/rally that took place when they first arrived in San Francisco. My grandfather was the first one to step off the transportation vehicle(don't know what kind of vehicle specifically) and put his feet on American grounds. When this moment happened,a newspaper reporter took a picture of my grand father taking the first step onto American soil and it was put on the front page. I know that it happened in San Francisco, CA during some time between 1950-1952. I'm guessing the newspaper could of been local but for sure their corporation was located in California.

If anyone has any information on this picture, newspaper, march/rally, event or if you know someone that might, can you please contact me? I'd really appreciate it. I want to find this article and photo because my grandfather has dimensia and can't remember alot of things. Also, he is very elderly and I want to find it for our family's benefit. Any information will be helpful. Thank you for your time.

-Jimenez, M.

What you need to do is contact a major Public Library in the SFO area and make the request via Email.

Librarians and Researchers at Public Libraries eat this stuff up and they will do a lookup for you, even if your not living there (just cut and paste this request...good enough). They will ask for money sometimes to do the search to cover their direct costs and send you the photos, reasonable and minor charge in most cases.

Good Luck and check your Email. Cool

You can probably use what I sent to attempt the search yourself as well. I'd like to help but I did this for my great uncles kid with even less information and it took months. Cool

One other thing to help you make sense of Army terminology. When you through a snowball in the Army. They do not state on official statements: "Threw a snowball", it's stated "Projecting a Missile".

So when you read text and it appears not to match, it might just be Officer-speak. Cool

Not a problem, Good Luck on your search and help someone else out that needs it when you run across them (and you will). BTW, if you can at Ft. Knox go to see the Civil War Fort Duffield in the corner of the Ft. Knox post, entrance at Muldraugh if I remember (base of the S-Curve hill on Hwy41 called the Muldraugh Hill, all the DS' know about it because it's a nightmare in winter...lol).

Million Dollar view of the Ohio River on that bluff. Worth the trip if you have the time and access to a car.
