The Carnegie Medal is awarded to civilians who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others. It is the highest award a civilian can receive for heroism.
Who is the only person to get this award and the Medal of Honor? (and was an Eagle Scout)
Stop taking life so seriously, you're not getting out alive anyway.
My ex Father in Law was born outside Abilene, Tx. Dyess AFB is there. I looked up the history one time and the article specifically said it was not named for LTC Dyess.
Funny how you learn information. I lived here in Augusta, Ga for over two years now and been driving up and down Jimmy Dyess Parkway without a clue. My son is in Scouts and Ft Gordon is sponsoring a big council camporee in October and it is called "Jimmy Dyess Days", so I looked him up and found out he is from Augusta,Ga and his history and stuff. Then you kinda feel like a twit because you didn't take the time to look it up before now, and you been driving up and down some road named for someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice and you didn't take the time to learn about it. At least that's how I feel in those circumstances.

I think Dyess was actually born in Andersonville. Moved to Augusta later.
My Dad's family is from GA. Supposedly, a large part of what is now Ft Gordon was, at one time, owned by his Mother's family. His Father was from the SW part of the state. My Grandad told me of visiting relatives, near Americus, when he was little. Him and his cousins would play Army in Andersonville Prison. Part of the stockade was still standing.
ie:I'm sure you've seen the films of the Air Florida crash into the Potomac River in Wash,DC. The guy who jumped in the water after the survivor, Leonard Skutnik, got a Carnegie Award.
Google Carnegie Award, it's got a bunch of stuff about it.
