"A Marine on duty has no friends."

While I'm all for new uniform items that help Marines out, I have never seen or heard of the uniform item that the above Marine is wearing.

It bears a striking resemblence to the Army Combat shirt seen below, which the Army authorized for wear...has the Corps done the same?

At least ours doesn't have an "Army Strong" logo on the front.! Maybe corporate advertisement on uniforms are the way of the future. We will look like NASCAR drivers.

I saw them a lot in Iraq. They are supposed to be flame retardent, but you'd catch a devil dogging for wearing them around Camp Ramadi without a flak over it. I think its called the Frog suit, I don't know if its supposed to stand for something or what. But I never wore it, I opted for the uber tacticle Ricky Recon Tan Flight Suit. Cool

Urban Legends That Make You Sweat
Source: StrategyPage.Com
June 23, 2008

For the last two years, the U.S. Army has been testing t-shirts that will keep troops cool, but will not melt if exposed to the flash of an explosion. These high-tech T-shirts employ fibers that wick sweat away from the body, cooling the wearer, or keeping them warmer in cold weather. Trouble is, the polyester used to do this melts if exposed to flame, which often happens when a roadside bomb goes off, and you are in the way. Two years ago, U.S. Marines were banned from using these polyester undergarments when in combat situations. While Marines understand the physics of it all, they also note that the army has no such ban.

The Marine ban is widely attributed to some craven generals who had been frightened by some weasel PAO (Public Affairs Officer) who pointed out how harmful it would be to a commanders career if the media got hold of a story about a marine getting killed because his polyester T-shirt melted. The reality was that the marines knew that the t-shirt was protected by the uniform blouse and body armor. If the flame got through all that, you were probably dead already. It was also noted that the army could not find any examples of such a melting incident. Marine officials spoke of "data suggested" and "estimated" incidents of synthetic t-shirts causing burn injuries.

The marines, who have to fight in the cold and heat, wanted the brass to get out of their underwear. The army was apparently aware of all this, and decided not to ban polyester. As a result of all this, many marines risk a fine or demotion by wearing the polyester undergarments anyway.

Meanwhile, researchers have made progress in creating a cloth that would wick, but not melt. The only problem remaining is to reduce the weight and thickness of the current materials to the point where it would be acceptable to troops. The last one was too heavy for the troops testing it, but next month a new version, 25 percent lighter than the last one, will be passed out to troops in Iraq.

actually the Marine Corps has been talking about that uniform for at least a year or more. I read it in the Marine Corps times some time around Feb or Mar of 2007. it is supose to be worn under you body armor instead of your blouse to keep you cool and is supose to be flame resistant, instead of wareing that one piece flight suit.

I saw a Marine wearing it here in Kuwait. Apparently someone higher is considering this uniform.

I was with PEO Soldier, and when me and my buddies took the shirt our of the box and saw the recruiting logo, we were like, "Somebody must be out of their mind!"

I mean, we didn't doubt the somewhat practicality of this new ACU shirt, we thought it was a little silly putting the recruiting slogan and logo.

Actually Dan, most Marines wear those now too. Those are Oakley M-Frame High Impact Galsses that protect you from debris and shrapnel from IEDs. I have a pair myself, and they are pretty good glasses. Just about everyone wears them in Iraq.

10-4. I guess if they had actually shown her in a field environment or wearing tactical gear it might've made more sense when I first saw it.

We got some Wiley-X's in Iraq issued from supply. I didn't like them though, ESS Glasses suck big time too. The frames like to fall off in the worst times, like outside the wire on a six hour patrol.

Reading Hathcoccccks account of the fire rescue from APC and his burns, can't see too many materials that would hold up to such flames and blast.

Guess if ya have massive flameout foam dispensers or water sprinkler system in all equipment.

With all that DOD money spent and MIT brains and they come up with polyester? Oh man...WTF?
