Was just thinkin, which base had the best Roach Coach? I am kinda torn between 77, H area (Camp Foster) honcho who always had the best bento after a nite out on the ville...and the 22 Area (Pendleton) hot Cali babe. Course, there were the Phillipinos who somehow managed to get to us in the field during floats and sell us EVERYTHING we needed...how they do that???? What was your best Roach Coach memory? Did you enjoy the food or the sights???

IMHO, Balikesir, Turkey during Display Determination 79.
The best gyros made in the world. Downside was the shiats from hell for the next week thereafter. Come to find out at a later date, they use human feces to fertilize their veggies. |

Ahhhh,,,,, you guys don't know what real eat'n is.
After not getting up in time for Breakfast, having to work through Noon Chow, your hangover really coming on strong at about 1500---- There was always one thing you could look forward to at HMM-164 on Okinawa: You could get a big, spicey, hot horsecock sausage on a sub roll with so much catsup & mustard on it you couldn't see the bun anymore, and a 20-something ounce RC Cola from the 'Mama-san trailer' for about a buck or so. That'd perk ya right back up. You'd be good to go until about 1800- when you could off and go get a hamberger at the club & watch the movie. Our 'Mama-san trailer' dining facility was a old 18 wheeler type cargo trailer with a window cut in the side to serve through, and it was permantly moored just outside the Hanger doors. . I remeber the Roach Coach in the 22 area and at onofre in the eraly 80's.....had that goofy bugle type horn on it.... Back then....when you had the "munchies"....it was good to go ! " Im not easily impressed....so think hard about it before you try" |

Any Roach Coach thaqt shows up when I'm hungry is a good one....
It's hard to mess up a candy bar and a soda... I think when I retire I'll buy a 7Ton or something and make a tactical roach caoch and just follow along in trace of the troops. I'll hire Logisticsguru to work out my resupply, get a few of the motor t types to drive the trucks. Deep Recon can do some forward scouting to find out who is low on geedunk. AHill to provide security. SgtShaw to make sure they are properly wearing their uniform... Hulin...you'll work the truck and with your looks I'm sure we'll all get rich And Dave...you've got a job just for the comedic relief.... |

MCAS El Toro, 1988. Midnights as an MP, sending one of the cars out to Del Taco for Carne Esada's (sp?). Burrito big as your head.

I'm old and my memory is going... I was with MCAS El Toro PMO 87-89. Do you remember Maj Fabrizio? We called him Maj Football Head. |

Holy sweet mother! Football head was just leaving as I was checking in, in late 1988. Not a very respectful nic name and I didn't know him, so I shouldn't repeat that....but I heard that used when I was there. Who are you? we have to know each other.
then another PM...a Lt Col...can't recall his name, Mormon guy, took over, and then it was Maj. Goodrow..... This message has been edited. Last edited by: BMGILLEY, |

I'd have to go with the roach coach on Camp Foster....came right to the Comm Shop (H area) in the am after PT & then showed up to the barracks at night (barracks # 5695) half way up the hill...but I also loved the tacos & beef on a stick just out the back gate, near the old 9th Motors motor pool...

I had a weak spot for the yakitori stands, they were the size of a phone booth, with a hibatchi on a shelf at the window. It was soo small the girl inside had to straddle the cooler with the meat and veggies inside.
By the way, do they still sell "Taco's"? I remember Taco's.....$.59 Chicken Taco's.....$.69 Beef Taco's.....$.79 I never got a a satifactory answer as to what type of meat was 'Taco meat'. -Frank |

I remember IN Oki outside the Foster gate as a boot I really believed that the monkey on a stick was real, so I avoided it till one nite I was so trashed I told myself I was gonna eat me some monkey...the guys were spitting their sides cause I could hardly walk, but somehow I managed to get to the honcho stand, (they still have the red cabs on base?) and told the honcho to take me to get some monkey...he took me to BC street where I wound up in a scivvy house...never did get any monkey! True Story!!!

When I was in Los Pulgas in the 70's the roach coach had a thing called a Padre.
It was a foot long spicy sausage with hot chili in a big burrito. I loved those but also had to have a supply of tum's handy. |

Worked the 1800-0600...one miserably cold night he came cruising up about 2300. Ask if I wanted a candy bar and to get into the car to get warm.. All I could think of was my mom saying "don't take candy from strangers"... Figured it was better to stay cold than to get warm and sleepy.... |

I still don't know who you are devil dog, what's your name? remember Damyanovich?- talked to him not long ago. Yes, that's the one. No, Gunny Aikey wasn't there when I went 5813 in '90. It was me, Cpl Dena Tamez (one outstanding WM) until Ssgt Gene Barker came over from Yuma. Then we got Cpl. Scott (from K-Bay I think) and Cpl Micheal Perkins. We had a good office. |

While ported in Nassau, Bahamas the 4th of July, 1994 aboard the USS Wasp, we missed evening chow. Starved, we spied a roach coach down on the pier.
The Rasta manning the thing spoke broken English, and instead of finding the traditional salmonella-sandwiches and burritos, this guy was stocked with the best selection of native chow. I settled for a plate of pickled pigs feet stew – it was gross, but we were hungry. .. |
