Hello. I'm active duty USMC. My MOS is 3043 - supply admin. I've been in almost two years, so I have two years active duty to go.
I've heard of/seen people here and there that were recalled to active duty after doing their full enlistment. My qestion is, what are the chances of me being recalled after I complete my four years and is there a way to make the chances of that happening smaller (by going to college, etc.)?
When you enlist, the average Marine enlists for a period of 4 years active, and 4 years inactive. A total of 8 years.
After you have served your 4 years active, you are moved to the Marine Corps IRR. While in the IRR you're required to check in once a year, and to keep your address current. It is possible for you to be activated at any time during the second four years.Once you're done w/ your 4 yr IRR stint you're done. If you're activated from the IRR I think it's possible for them to hold you over your four year period if necessary. This is unlikely though.

If you mean your first four years as your "full enlistment" that is incorrect. Your "full enlistment" is eight years. Once you're done w/ your 8 years you're done, and they cannot recall you.
Like I said in the other post I received the letter, almost of my seniors that got out after 4 were either extended or recalled. So like Gene said, expect it.
I realize that I signed for 4 years active and then 4 reserve but what dictates who gets called back? Is it just completely random? Do they care if you've gotten yourself enrolled at a University or gotten into a career? I'm just asking the question, I realize that whatever happens happens and I shouldn't be surprised if I get recalled considering I signed the contract.
Couple of other questions: If recalled, would one report back to whatever base they had served at upon EAS or could it be to any base?
Are recalls only called for 8 or so months to serve on a deployment or could they spend a couple of years just to work stateside?
They don't care whats going on in your personal life. If they want you, they will recall you. I don't know how they choose, it's probably MOS needs, though.
I would assume that you would be sent to the nearest reserve center for recall. When I was IRR Marines, I got called to a reserve center at Ft. Lewis for a one day thing.
A recall could be for the remainder of your contractual obligation. And, yes, you could spend it all stateside.
