Grammy-Winning Comedian, Counter-Culture Figure George Carlin Dies at 71
Monday, June 23, 2008

George Carlin
George Carlin, a Grammy-winning comedian, actor and writer, who became a counter-culture figure famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure near Los Angeles Sunday, Reuters reported. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Carlin became an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his comedy routines ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

He released 22 solos albums and three best-selling books was famous for his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine. He also acted in a variety of movie and TV roles.

Carlin was due to be awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts at November 10 ceremony, according to an AP report.

Hopefully George Bush, before he does something stupid that screws up our Country or Economy even more, than the damage he has already done.

The world is going to be much less funnier. He was definitely cut from the non-politically correct cloth and he never failed to make me laugh, even when he was off-color, by my taste. He was truely a funny man.

I can't imagine there is anyone who doesn't know who George Carlin is, but if you don't, here is one of his monologues. Seven words you can never say on TV. Of course you miss the effect of his own voice but for me, I can hear him speaking as I read this. I can hear ever inflection, ever pause, I'm laughing right now as I read it. I'd post it here but alas, you can't say those words here either and it's too hard editing them out. Big Grin Big Grin

Rest in peace George.

I never really got into George Carlin - he did an anti-Marine Corps. joke once that I didn't find particularly funny. That said, it seems like people who are liked or respected by so many are dropping like flies.

Which leads me to ask: how do people like Jane Fonda, Marion Barry, Al Sharpton, Osama bin Laden, and a host of others who really NEED to go manage to keep stealing oxygen?

There's a lesson in that, but I damn sure don't know what it is Big Grin.

RIP

Don't you think it's a bit tacky using someones death to criticize the President.
