Marine officials confirmed Wednesday that a Folsom. Pa.-based unit was the target of a Tuesday roadside bombing in Iraq that killed three Marines. The six casualties were from Bridge Co. B, 6th Engineer Support Group, based in Folsom. One of the dead is from the Philadelphia area, while the other two Marines killed are from northern New Jersey and the Baltimore area. Killed in the attack were Sgt. Alan Sherman, of northern New Jersey, Cpl. John Todd III, of Montgomery County (Pa.) and Lance Cpl. Patrick Adle, from the Baltimore area. Wounded in the attack were Sgt Matthew Crawford, of Delaware County (Pa.) and Cpl. Matheusz Erszkowicz, of northern New Jersey. The blast ripped through a U.S. military convoy Tuesday, in the first fatal attack on U.S. troops since American administrators transferred sovereignty to the interim Iraqi government. The blast occurred on a four-lane highway in the Rustamiyah district. U.S. officials had warned that the transfer of sovereignty would not stop the anti-American insurgency right away. -30- |

Lejeune Marine dies in explosion in Iraq; was 22
Lance Cpl. Justin T. Hunt worked hard just to get into the Marines, losing 140 pounds to become eligible for boot camp. "He always wanted to be a Marine," said Hunt's twin, Jason. "He was very bright. He always had a good sense of humor and was very athletic." Justin Hunt, who completed boot camp in January 2003, was killed Tuesday in an explosion during a security mission in Iraq's al-Anbar province. His older brother, Robert, is also stationed in Iraq, with the Navy, and will accompany the body home. Justin Hunt, 22, of Riverside, Calif., was a member of the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in the 2nd Marine Division of Camp Lejeune's II Marine Expeditionary Force. He is survived by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. |

July 8, 2004
DIGHTON, Mass. (AP) -- Lance Cpl. John J. Vangyzen IV was excited about his first tour of duty in Iraq. But life in a war zone had changed him, and he showed more uncertainty when he redeployed in February, his stepmother said. "He was scared. He wasn't happy," said Jane Vangyzen on Wednesday, two days after finding out her stepson had died in fighting in Al Anbar Province in Iraq. Yet, she said, he felt that what he was doing was important, and was determined to carry out his duty. "He's a hero just like all the soldiers that died in Iraq," said his father, John Vangyzen III, choking back tears. "I'm very proud of what they all did." Vangyzen served his first tour from early 2003 to October. He went back to Iraq in February and was scheduled to return to the U.S. in September, his father said. Father and son spent a week together in California before the redeployment. "We had a blast. We went bungee jumping together," the elder Vangyzen said. "It wasn't son and father. It was dude and dad." Vangyzen enlisted in the Marines while he was still a student at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. He planned to re-enlist for four years in the military police, in the hopes of learning the skills that would one day allow him to join the Massachusetts State Police, his stepmother said. Vangyzen was assigned to the Third Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Twentynine Palms, the Marines said. Another Marine from Vangyzen's unit, Michael S. Torres, 21, of El Paso, Texas, was killed in the same attack. In addition to his father and stepmother, Vangyzen is survived by his wife, Amanda, of Twentynine Palms; his mother, Dorothy Arsenault, of West Warwick, R.I.; three sisters, and two stepsisters. Vangyzen is the second graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth to die in Iraq. Marine Capt. Benjamin Sammis of Rehoboth, a 1992 graduate, was killed in action in April 2003. ### |
