Max E. BENTON

NEWPORT NEWS - MSGT Max E. Benton, 55, born on July 14, 1954, went to be with his Lord on April 8, 2010.
After attending Ferguson High School, Mr. Benton joined the Marines where he served on fire fighting crash crew in Okinawa, Japan, and also the Philippines. After retirement, he went to work as head fire chief at Burbank International Airport and was later promoted to head of operations for the airport. He later served on an operations board for LAX after the Sept. 11, attacks on the World Trade Center. He was instrumental in helping develop new plans for the fight against terrorism. He retired again and spent a few years traveling the U.S.
Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his father, Ray Benton of Sparks, Nev.; mother, Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Benton of Newport News; a dear nephew, Paul Tonn of Clear Lake, Wis.; and a very close and lifelong friend, Hunter R. Avis of Lake Gaston, N.C.
Left to cherish his memory is 'the jewel of his life,' his daughter, Crystal, and his future son-in-law, Randy Percell, and her mother, Marlene; sisters, Ann Simpson of Georgia, Nina and husband, the Rev. Gary Tonn of Clear Lake, Wis., Lisa and husband, Mike Stevenson of Richmond; brothers, Robert Benton and wife, Lynice of Sparks, Nev., James and wife, Wendy of Wahpeton, N.D. He was a cherished uncle and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by many close friends including his retired buddies, MSGT Harn and wife, Barbara, and fellow Marine, 'Tops.'
As many friends will attest that 'Gunny' Benton firmly believed that once a Marine always a Marine. Although he will not be able to attend his daughter, Crystal's wedding, he will be there in spirit.
Memorial services are pending at Riverside National Cemetery, California.

Richard M. MUSICK
SUFFOLK - Richard Morgan Musick, 65, died April 15, 2010, at Sentara Obici
Hospital.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Jack W. Musick; and brother,
Charles W. Musick.

Richard Morgan Musick was a passionate man who loved God, life, America,
family, and friends. A true aviator, he owned and operated Mercury Flight
Center in Chesapeake for the past 27 years. He helped innumerable student
pilots achieve their aviation dreams in a warm and welcoming environment.
Richard also donated countless hours of his time to aid in life-saving
events through air transportation.
Captain Richard Musick served as a Marine Corp Casualty Evacuation MH-46
helicopter pilot, during the Vietnam War, with the Purple Fox Unit. His
service medals include the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Medal,
the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Civilian Act Medal.
Richard continued to defend the United States throughout his lifetime.
Following 9-11, he served in the Special Operations community, participating
in numerous Counter-Terrorism operations. Most recently he supported Rapid
Reaction Search and Rescue and Humanitarian Relief Operations after the 2010
Haitian earthquake. He is credited with the evacuation of 105 U.S. dependent
children and the delivery of the medical supplies necessary to keep 11
Haitian field hospitals operating in the early days after the earthquake.
Because of his considerable dedication and continuing service to the nation,
he was asked by the 9-11 Responders and Family communities to stand with
them in the annual Remembrance at Ground Zero in New York. An extremely
proud professional accomplishment was that despite various missions of
considerable risk "he never left a man in the zone." His service to God
includes serving a Christian Missionary Mission to Peru.
As a family man, Richard was a dependable, committed, and caring husband,
who was a strong role model and loving father who taught by example the most
important life lessons to his two sons, family, friends, students, pilots,
teammates, and all who knew him. He will be missed by all of us and never
forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan M. Musick; sons, Charles W. Musick
II, and Richard M. Musick; his mother, Frances D. Musick; brother, John D.
Musick and wife, Peggy of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister, Conrad M. Purrington
and husband, Philip of Merry Point, Va.; mother-in-law, Josephine H.
Montgomery of Roanoke, Va.
A memorial service will be conducted at Westminster Reformed Presbyterian
Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434 on Sunday, April 18, 2010. at 3
p.m., by the Rev. Dan Kerley. A committal service, with full military
honors, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, April, 19, at Albert G. Horton
Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434. R.W. Baker
& Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA 23434 is
serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American
Cancer Society , 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434; or to the
church.

Samuel P. POWERS

HAYES - Samuel Paul Powers, of Hayes, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010,
at his residence surrounded by family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Virginia; daughters, Nancy
(Carter) Richardson, Tricia (Doug) Weatherford, and Garet Powers; sons, S.
Paul (Leslie) Powers and Gary Powers; eight grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patricia Brown; and three nephews.
Sam was born on Sept. 3, 1923. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Sam was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons.
Sam served in the U.S. Marine Corps, throughout World War II (1941-1945),
reaching the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Powers was stationed for over two years
in the South Pacific region, from Pago Pago, Tukwila, American Samoa, Hilo,
Hawaii, to Guam. Sam, fighting with the Fifth Joint Assault Signal Company,
Fifth Marine Division, landed in the first wave to confront the Japanese on
Iwo Jima and was involved in the battle until the island was secured. His
company received the Presidential Unit Citation. Sam was awarded the Purple
Heart Medal for wounds suffered during the battle.
He was employed as Executive Vice President of Associated Mortgage Company
in Hampton, with branch offices in Richmond, Norfolk, and Waynesboro. More
recently, he served as Executive Vice President of Advance Mortgage
Corporation, a subsidiary of Citi Bank. He managed operations in Seattle,
Denver, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota, Miami, and New
Orleans.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at the First
Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Douglas Nagel officiating. Interment
will be at Quantico National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of First Presbyterian
Church; or to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Leonard M. HUDSON

NEWPORT NEWS - Leonard Myles 'Doc' Hudson, 68, passed away on Saturday,
April 24, 2010, at Sentara Careplex. Doc had been a resident of Newport News
his entire life.
Mr. Hudson retired from the Newport News Police Dept. as a Detective after
30 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a
Lance Corporal and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Doc was also a drum major for Newport News Police Pipes and Drums and
Newport News FOP.
He was preceded in death by his father, David; and his sister, Marsha.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; one daughter, Monica Lee Hudson
Stefanowicz and husband, Michael; two sons, Scott and Todd Hudson and wife,
Dradi; mother, Mary Hudson; brother, Mark Hudson and wife, Debbie; four
grandchildren, Kyle Michael Stefanowicz, Lauren Marie Hudson, David Joseph
Stefanowicz and Andrew Scott Hudson; two nieces, April Hudson and Amy
Reiger; and one nephew, Shaun Rosenbaum.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Funeral services will follow at 5 p.m.
Committal will be in the Memorial Garden at the church.

John T. ROTAN

GLOUCESTER - John Thomas Rotan, 62, died April 29, 2010, at Riverside Walter
Reed Hospital.
John served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He received the
national Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Service Medal
and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was named Veteran of the Year, State of
Virginia, a recognition he received for being the most outgoing and helping
others. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 58, Gloucester
where he held all officer seats and was Commander for two terms. John was a
man who fought hard to do the right thing no matter the cost. He will be
remembered for being the most loving, decent and civil man this world has
ever known.
His parents, John and Ceceil Rotan; son, Dominick Rotan; and a brother and
sister preceded him in death.
He is survived by wife, Christine Rotan; son, John Rotan; daughters, Sherri
Rotan, Amey Jo Quisenberry and husband, Billy; six grandchildren, Kyle
Rotan, Shanea Mertz, Brad Rotan, Zachary Rotan, Parker Quisenberry and Emily
Quisenberry.
Funeral services officiated by Pastor Sherlene Hubbard and Shirley Goodwin
will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
Interment with military honors will follow in Windsor Gardens Cemetery. The
family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the

John C. MOORE

ALEXANDRIA - John C. Moore (Jack), 90, died on April 24, 2010.
He was born in Washington, D.C., and lived most of his life in Northern
Virginia. He was married to the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Hancock
Moore, for 66 years. She preceded him in death in 2007 and he now joins her
in heaven. His parents; two brothers; and one sister, also preceded him in
death.
One brother, Harry of Florida, survives him. Jack was a devoted husband,
father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind four sons, all
of Virginia, John A. Moore (Sally) of Springfield, Thomas M. Moore of
Woodbridge, Daniel T. Moore (Cathy) of Woodbridge, Robert (Terry) Moore (Jo
Ann) of Newport News; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jack proudly served in the U.S. Marines, in the South Pacific during World
War 11. He trained and handled war dogs used for security and detecting
enemy ambushes. After the war, he was allowed to bring his German Shepherd
war dog, Rex, home and remained the family pet for 12 years. After the war,
he worked as a machinist at the Naval Gun Factory and later transferred to
the Department of the Navy. He retired in 1974 from Defense Supply Agency.
Jack enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with others. He remained
very active after retirement, volunteering in many activities. He taught
marksmanship and archery in the Boy Scouts and volunteered at Huntley Meadow
Park in Alexandria. There he cleared trails, taught and managed wildlife
habitat, and gave guided tours. The park honored Jack for 20 years of
volunteer service. He was a member and past president of the Brotherhood of
the Jungle Cock (Maryland Chapter), where he mentored youth in the art and
skill of fly-fishing. He was a Life member of the American Legion and an
honorary member of the Vietnam War Dog Association. In the year 2000, Jack
attended the dedication of the 1st U.S. National War Dog Memorial in
Riverside, Calif. Jack leaves a legacy of family, patriotism and his love
for nature and the great outdoors.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 7th, at
the home of Mr. & Mrs. Moore of Newport News, with Chaplain Deborah Morris

Nicholas D. FERRARO

HAMPTON - Nicholas "Nick" Deuel Ferraro, age 63, departed this life on May
6, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Nick was a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps., and served three years
on the Silent Drill Team stationed at Marine Barracks '8th & I" in
Washington, D.C. He worked as a waterman for several years and retired after
30 years as a self-employed carpet installer.
Nick was preceded in death by his mother, Jacqueline C. Ferraro.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 25 years, Trish Causa Ferraro;
two sons, Chris and Mark Moore; three grandchildren, Jordan, Marshall, and
Riley Moore; a special daughter, Michelle Sowden, all of Hampton, Va.;
sister, Santa Ferraro Benoit and husband Tom of Minneapolis, Minn.; two
brothers, Nicholas and Joseph Ferraro; father, Nicholas F. Ferraro, all of
Elizabeth City, N.C.; a host of sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces,
nephews, and many wonderful friends. Nick was a very special person who
extended his charming character and love to all he met. He will be greatly
missed by all the lives he touched.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 10, at
Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666; a
celebration of Nick's life will follow at 7 p.m.

Leland L. BLANDING III

HAYES - Leland L. Blanding III, 75, died May 12, 2010, at his home
surrounded by his family.
He was a native of Syracuse, N.Y. At the age of 16 Lee joined the Marine
Corps, served a tour of duty in Korea and was a Drill Instructor at Paris
Island and Marine Corp recruiter in Syracuse, N.Y. He was a recipient of the
Good Conduct Medal. Lee held a public office seat in the State of New York
and was the Police Commissioner in Camillus, N.Y. His real passion of work
was in the company he co-owned, building Crest Manor Homes in Israel and all
over the State of Virginia. Lee had a great love for the outdoors, the
beauty of nature and enjoyed the fishing trips with his son to the Thousand
Islands on the Canadian border, which includes some of the greatest fishing
in the world. Lee was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, leaving
behind a legacy of accomplishments and achievements earned with an
unparallel combination of dignity, drive and respect for all of those around
him.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly J. Blanding; daughters,
Kelly Cutrone, Allison Turk and husband, Jimmy; son, Leland L. "Lee"
Blanding IV and wife, Suzanne; granddaughters, Taylor, Lindsey, Jordan,
Katherine, Alana, Peyton, Ava and Reagan.
Services will be private.
In memory of Lee, contributions may be made to Riverside Walter Reed
Hospice, P. O. Box 1130, Gloucester, VA 23061.

Hammond, Frank William (Bill), after a long battle with early onset Alzheimer's, Bill Hammond passed on May 13, 2010. Bill was born in Kearny, New Jersey, on February 10, 1942. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corp. During his time in the Marines, he married Karen Faillace, his high school sweetheart and started a loving family. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his daughter, Leona Hammond; his daughter, Cheri Scott, (Mike); and their son, Michael William Scott; and also Patricia Best, Bill's sister. Purger M.D., Dr. John Clayton, 84, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, passed away on April 22, 2010, at Imperial Point Hospital. Born November 6, 1925 in Columbus, OH, John was the son of Rudy and Faye Purger. Preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Marie, John attended Military School in St. Petersburg, FL, and at 17 years of age joined the Marines Corp. John was trained as an aviation technician, later stationed in China during WWII. After a six year tour, John returned to Miami where he was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Miami Medical School where he earned three consecutive degree. A retired Obstetrician and Gynecologist, John was in practice in the greater Fort Lauderdale area for over 40 years. He was a member of numerous OBGYN Societies and on staff at several South Florida Hospitals. He was also a licensed M.D. in North Carolina, where he and his wife have a home. John was a member of the Flying Physicians Organization as well as a member of the African Safari Club. He is survived by his wife, Renee Finchell Purger, who was his RN office nurse and surgical assistant for 25 years; by his daughter, Nancy Hope Finchell Esq. of Fort Lauderdale, FL; sister-in-law, Mrs. Fran Berman of Miami; and Judith of Johnstown, PA. Kelley, Francis P., 85, of Delray Beach, FL, passed away on April 29, 2010 at home, his wife, Bette, with whom he shared the love and magic for 30 years, at his side. Born in Lynn, MA, April 7, 1925, he was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Beatrice Kelley; brother, Mel Kelley; and sisters, Dorothy Hoff, Bernice Giliberty and Helen Kelley. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Duckstein; daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Gordon Rowley and Sarah and Peter St. Laurent; also by his son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Judith Kelley; and sons, Mark and Garth Kelley; in addition he leaves eight grand-children; and four great-grandchildren. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps., Third Division, Amphibious Corps. in the South Pacific and China during WWII. He was a graduate of Columbia University, NY with two Master's degrees. Throughout his distinguished career of over 40 years in human services, he shared knowledge, expertise and friendship with parents, professionals and persons with developmental disabilities throughout the United States, Brazil, Ireland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Argentina and France. As an advocate and friend for all those with developmental disabilities, not only within the framework of state and federal government, but also in terms of his sincere and personal commitment to improving their welfare, quality of life, rights and dignity, has been a catalyst for creating dramatic and positive changes in the lives of thousands. He was a consultant to President John F. Robert Paul Schroeder | Visit Guest Book


Schroeder, Robert Paul, formerly of Boynton Beach, Florida, Northfield and Northbrook, Illinois passed away June 1, 2010 at his home in Delray Beach, Florida. Born in St. Louis, Missouri August 14, 1919, Mr. Schroeder attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity graduating with a degree in journalism in 1941. There he met his beloved wife of 65 years, Doris Marie Deaderick, marrying her on July 22,1944. Mr. Schroeder became one of the most highly decorated Marine aviators of the Second World War logging 189 combat missions in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross 9 times in addition to 28 Air Medals before retiring from the Marine Corps Reserve at the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mr. Schroeder's business career in radio and television broadcast advertising spanned 41 years with executive positions in Pittsburgh, New York, Cleveland and Chicago, 31 of those with CBS Network Radio from which he retired in 1987. In addition to his wife, Mr. Schroeder is survived by two loving sons, Bryant (Linda) of Glenview, Illinois and Todd (Michael Schultz) of Miami Shores, Florida, cousins, nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Willard. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23rd, at Abbey Delray South, 1717 Homewood Blvd in Delray Beach, Florida. Donations may be made to the American Parkinsons Disease Association or the charity of your choice.

Eugene Marcus Wooten (1934 - 2010)


Eugene Marcus Wooten passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, at his home in Benbrook. Eugene was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Graveside service: A service at the grave will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Southland Cemetery, Grand Prairie. Visitation: The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lucas Sylvania Funeral Home. Eugene was born in Barrell Hollow, Ark., June 22, 1934. He graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea. After being discharged, he returned to Fort Worth and began his career at General Dynamics (Lockheed) where he worked until his retirement in 1996. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Earman and Martha Wooten. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; by his son, Michael and wife, Wendy; by his son, Marc; granddaughters, Sydney and Samantha; three sisters; and one brother.

Ronald W. WOODARD

HAMPTON - The Lord has called Ronald William Woodard home.
Ronald was born on Aug. 8, 1950, in Newport News, Va. Ronald attended
Huntington High School in Newport News, Va., prior to joining the armed
forces as a United States Marine.
Mr. Woodard spent three years in the Marine Corps, serving in Camp LeJeune,
S.C., and Okinawa, Japan. He was an accomplished painter and carpenter and a
long time member of Gesthemane Baptist Church.
Mr. Woodard is preceded in eternal rest by his parents, Jesse and Pauline H.
Woodard; and sisters, Harestine W. Hicks, Mary F. Osborne and Blondena S.
Woodard.
He is survived by brothers, J. Lincoln Woodard, Esq. of Fort Washington,
Md., and Harold L. Woodard of Washington, D.C.; and sisters, Rosana W.
Jackson of Waldorf, Md., and Regena W. Walker of Manassas, Va.; as well as
14 nieces and nephews, 16 great-nieces and nephews, one great-great- niece
and a host of cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at Gesthemane
Baptist Church, 3509 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607, (757) 244

HAMPTON - Gary Kent Krause, 58, of Chesapeake Ave., died Saturday, June 19,
2010 in Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News, Va.
Mr. Krause was born in Chowan County, N.C., and was the son of the late
Quentin and Hazel Dail Krause.
A quality control manager with International Communications Group, he was a
member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton; Kempsville Masonic Lodge;
the Experimental Aircraft Association; and the Fleet 30 Sailing Club. A 1973
graduate of East Carolina University, he had served as a Captain in the U.S.
Marine Corps during the Vietnam era.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Ann Caldwell-Krause; two sisters, Linda
Krause and Joanie Krause-Harrell, both of Hertford; a niece, Traci Goodwin;
nephews, Scott Godfrey, and Miles and Zach Harrell; and his canine
companions, Harley and Baxter.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church,
207 S. Church Street, Hertford, NC. Military rites will follow and will be
accorded at the gravesite in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125
Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and again from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Masonic rites will be accorded at the beginning of the Wednesday visitation
in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to any chapter

NEWPORT NEWS - William Daniel Hodges, 50, also known as Tripp, Bill, and
Billie, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Born on Oct. 1, 1959, in Fayetteville, N.C., he was a Peninsula resident for
the past 40 years. Bill was in the U.S Marine Corp from 1977 to 1984, worked
for Anheuser Busch, and Ball Metal Container and attended Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel Catholic Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Allison Michelle Hodges; and six brothers
and sisters, James Franklin McEllis, Charles Oakley McElhose, Cynthia Dawn
Fann, Ronald Kay McElhose Sr., Dale Anthony Hodges and Mark Allen Hodges.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010, at
the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel with Military Honors. The family will

HAMPTON - Lt. Col. Neal Behan, U.S.M.C. (ret.), died on June 20, 2010, at
the age of 75.
He was born and spent his formative years in Jersey City, N.J. A graduate of
St. Michael's High School, Neal received a Bachelor of Science degree from
St. Peter's College, Jersey City, and a Master of Science degree from the
University of Arkansas.
Following graduation from St. Peter's College, he was honorably discharged
from the United States Navy and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Upon completion of OCS at Quantico, Va., Neal was appointed a second
lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. In 1984, after 31 years of
service to his country, retirement presented the opportunity to continue to
serve his community in other ways.
Neal was a member of the board of the Willow Oaks Recreational Association
for several years. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Hampton,
Past Lt. Governor, Capital District, and District Chairman of the Kiwanis
International Foundation. Neal welcomed the challenge to help others,
especially children, through Kiwanis. He cherished the memories and
friendships made over the years.
Neal was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Behan; and father,
Cornelius J. Behan.
He is survived by his wife, Jo; children, Cornelius F. Behan, Durham, N.C.;
Judith and Jay Classen, Holly Springs, N.C.; Marykate and Steve Dougherty,
Arlington, Va.; Heidi and Joseph Behan, Lorton, Va.; Jerami and Michael
Behan; grandchildren, Meghan and Jacob Classen, Holly Springs; Sean
Dougherty, Arlington; Elijah, Caitlin, Claire, Caden and Carys Behan,
Lorton. Also surviving is a maternal aunt, Rose G. Miller, Jersey City.
A mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 30, at 3 p.m. at St. Rose of
Lima Catholic Church, Hampton. Following the mass, the family will receive
friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Crown Plaza, Hampton. Memorials can be
directed to The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Childrens
Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

James E. STEELE

NORFOLK - Dr. James Eugene Steele, 77, passed away on June 24, 2010.
He was born in Norfolk, Va., to the late James E. Steele and Blanche Munden
Steele.
He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow, at Valley
Forge, Pa. He was a graduate of Maury High School, Old Dominion University,
Temple University and received his doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern
University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. At the age of 17, he
began a career with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, being their youngest
member at that time. Dr. Steele performed on the flute and piccolo and
studied extensively in Europe. He began his career with Hampton City Schools
as choral director for Jefferson Davis Junior High. His career rose to
Supervisor of Music and Art for Hampton City Schools. Dr. Steele retired as
Supervisor of Music and Art. He served as choir director for Calvin
Presbyterian Church, Freemason Street Baptist Church, and Armstrong Memorial
Presbyterian Church. Besides his parents, Dr. Steele was predeceased by his
very special aunt, Julia Wells.
Dr. Steele is survived by his loving companion, Shirley M. Parker; and his
cousin, Gerald L. Wells and wife, Jackie of Richmond, Va.
Services will be held on Monday, June 28, 2010, at Altmeyer Funeral Home,
5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. Visitation will begin at noon. A
celebration of life service will begin at 2 p.m. with Dr. John H. LaMotte
officiating. Burial will be private.

Norman R. SAWYER

WILLIAMSBURG - Norman R. Sawyer, 81, of Williamsburg, died, Saturday, June
26, 2010.
He was born in Point Harbor, N.C. He enlisted in the United States Marine
Corps in 1946 and was stationed at the Naval Mine Depot where he was a Guard
for the main gate. He was always chosen to be out in front because of his
distinguished looks and sharp appearance. After being honorably discharged
from the Marine Corps, he worked for Colonial Williamsburg for 15 years as a
maintenance carpenter. He left Colonial Williamsburg and went into business
for himself.
He was an accomplished business man as a General Building Contractor, owned
Better Buy Building Supply for more than 20 years, and Colonial Maintenance
Service. He served on the James City County Board of Zoning Appeals and was
a Volunteer on the James City County Red Cross Board of Directors Disaster
Action Team. He was the American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1989.
But most of all, he was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and
great grandfather and enjoyed spending time on the beaches of Nags Head.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Edward Sawyer; mother, Ruth
Alma Sawyer; sisters, Martha Beaudoin and Mildred Williamson.
He is survived by wife, Hazel Marie Teague Sawyer to whom he was married for
63 years; his sons, Randy Sawyer, Williamsburg, Mark Sawyer (Wanda), Spring
Hill, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Matt Sawyer (Tina), Williamsburg, Ben Sawyer
(Jana), Williamsburg, Daniel Sawyer (Lesley), Murfreesboro, Tenn., Carrie
Sawyer, Spring Hill, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Blake and Caden Sawyer,
Williamsburg, Jackson Sawyer, Williamsburg; brother, Lewis Sawyer Jr.,
Portsmouth, Va.; sister, Blinda Tino, (Bernie Demarco), Edenton, N.C.;
brother-in-law, Vern Williamson, San Diego, Calif.; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2010, in the
Bucktrout Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Williamsburg Memorial

John P. ZIMBA

CHESAPEAKE - Captain John Patrick Zimba, USMC (Ret), born Feb. 3, 1920 in
Manhattan, N.Y., passed away peacefully on July 4, 2010.
He was the fourth of six children born to Polish/Austrian immigrants,
Valentine and Gabriella Zimba. He was preceded in death by his wife of
almost 50 years, Evelyn Georgiana Murray Zimba; his parents; his youngest
sister, Eleanor Peller; and older brothers, William and Joseph Zimba.
After graduating from James Monroe High School, at 16, John worked as a
messenger delivery boy in New York City. From there, he joined the Civilian
Conservation Corps and was sent to work in the forests of Washington State.
Shortly after that, he went to San Diego, Calif., to enlist in the U.S.
Marines. John served briefly in China before being transferred to the
Philippines right before WWII. He was on Corregedor when it was surrendered
to the Japanese. He was a POW for 40 months and was forced to work in a
Japanese copper mine until the end of the war in the Pacific. When he
returned home, he was a guard at the United Nations, a Marine recruiter, and
later was in charge of supplies on a ship that guarded the Panama Canal
during the Bay of Pigs. After a long military career, he retired in July
1964. John began a second career with McDonald's Hamburgers in 1964. He
eventually helped start a school for managers and assistant managers in
northern Virginia and in Norfolk, Va. He had many wonderful stories to tell
about both careers and about growing up in New York City.
In his later years, John loved living with his daughter, Lorraine, where he
could be involved with his granddaughters and they with him. They brought a
smile to his face every day.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Barbara Z. Johnson and
husband, Al of Smithfield, and Lorraine A. Peters and husband, Kurt of
Chesapeake; his granddaughters, Victoria and Delaney Peters of Chesapeake;
his sister, Anna Cooper of New York City; his brother, Frank Zimba and wife,
Elizabeth of Yale, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces, and
grand nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Ebenezer
United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant
Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Kevin Patrick Foudy AKA " Papa" born August 20, 1957 in Queens, New York, passed away unexpectedly July 5, 2010 in his Pompano Beach home. Kevin served in the United States Marine Corps form 1976 to 1978. He devoted his life to Jesus and helping share the Lord's word to others. Kevin made a huge impact touching many as a dedicated sponsor and "friend of Bill W." Kevin had a passion for fishing, sports and most of all, a true love for family. He is survived by his Fiance Laurel, who has been his life companion for over 10 years and grandmother to his grandson Kenny. He is also survived by his beloved son, Shaun and daughter Nicole, his loving mother Ann, sister Joyce, the love of his life who idolized him, his beloved grandson Kenneth Charles, nephew Taylor, nieces Angela & Alana, brother-in-law Terry, daughter in-law Toni and many very special Aunts, Uncle and cousins, all of whom he adored. Tony Wayne Ramirez Sr., 63, a loving husband, father and grandfather, departed this life Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary: 5 p.m. Sunday in Mount Olivet Funeral Home Chapel. Tony proudly served his country serving two tours in Vietnam and was a three-time Purple Heart recipient. He was active in the Marine Corps League and Tarrant County Young Marine program. He was a master Mason, enjoyed music, dancing and cooking out with family and friends. Tony was employed by Bell Helicopter Textron for 15 years. His family and friends will remember his ability to make people laugh and his dedication to the Young Marine program. Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Nasaria Ramirez; brother, Manuel Ramirez; and sister, Juanita Johnson. WILLILAMSBURG - Dr. G. William Bullock Jr. died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at
home with family members by his side.
Professor Bullock completed his 40th year of service to education in America
when he retired from the College of William and Mary in the spring of 1992,
having dedicated 25 of the years to the College's School of Education.
Throughout those years, he distinguished himself as a rigorous thinker, a
demanding teacher, a formidable colleague, an uncompromising scholar, and a
continuing student in his chosen field of educational administration.
He was a veteran of military service in the United States Marine Corps.
Dr. Bullock was preceded in death by his youngest son, David Brian Bullock.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Jenny) Qualls Bullock; a son, Stephen
Bullock of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Elizabeth Bullock Diakun (Alan) of
Charlotte, N.C., and Margaret Ann Bullock Walker (Jim) of Richmond, Va.;
five grandsons, Stephen Adam Bullock, Nicholas Charles Diakun, Christopher
Willard Walker, James Cameron Marshall Walker, Avery Matthew Walker; and one
granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Diakun.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Williamsburg Memorial Park. A
celebration of Dr. Bullock's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3,
in the Wren Chapel at the College of William and Mary. A reception will
follow in the Great Hall of the Wren Chapel. Parking is available in the lot
on Prince George St., behind the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Curtin, Cornelius, Joseph "Jack", passed peacefully in his sleep the morning of Thursday, July 8th, 2010 at the age of 75. Jack was born September 13th, 1934 in Orange, New Jersey and grew up in Sea Girt, NJ (Monmouth County) and died at his home in Boca Raton, Florida. As a young man, Jack proudly served his country in the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. After his time spent in the service, Jack relocated to Florida where he spent more than 50 years living in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Jack was an entrepreneur, an avid swimmer and fitness enthusiast. In the late 1950's he combined some of these interests and opened Jack Curtin Swim School (1958-1964). Always with an eye on health, nutrition and fitness, he later opened the Jack Curtin Health Studio. As time allowed Jack indulged his passion for the outdoors by spending time on his ranch. He enjoyed the quiet cowboy lifestyle and his horse Big Red. He was always a gentleman and had little time for vulgarity. Jack was quick with a joke or humorous anecdote. His sense of humor made him a fun and easy person to be around. Jack loved life and lived it to the fullest. He had a way of making everyone feel comfortable, counting his friends from every walk of life. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. This world would be a better place if there were more Jack Curtins. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Mr.& Mrs. Eugene F. Curtin and his older brother Eugene Jr. He is survived by his loving family: son and daughter-in-law, Gene and M'liss Curtin of Atlanta, Ga., son Sean Curtin of Overgaard, Az., daughter Christina Curtin of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and bother John Curtin of Boca Raton, FL., plus numerous cousins. A private service for the family will be held at a future date

Alexander W. POWELL

WILLIAMSBURG - Alexander W. Powell, Colonel, USMC (ret.) died on Aug.
7, 2010.
Col. Powell was born in Fountain Hill, Pa., on Nov. 11, 1941, and
raised in Baltimore, Md. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1963, serving as
a linguist. In 1966, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and changed his
primary specialty to field artillery officer. Col. Powell's career in the
Marine Corps included service in the Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War. His
personal decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Legion of
Merit. After serving his country for 30 years, Col. Powell retired from the
Marine Corps and moved to Williamsburg, Va., where he worked as an agent for
Farmers Insurance, before fully retiring.
Col. Powell enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his
grandchildren's sporting events. He was a great man with a remarkable
memory, who always enjoyed a good laugh. His kindness, humble character and
genuine interest in his fellow man will be missed.
Col. Powell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Ann Powell; his
daughter, Nancy Sheffler; son-in-law, Steve Sheffler; son, Alexander W.
Powell Jr.; daughter-in-law, Kristina Powell; and his five grandchildren,
Jason Cormier, Jeffrey Cormier, Alexander Powell III, Connor Powell, and
Andrew Powell.
A service will be held for Col. Powell at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11,
2010, at Nelson Chapel, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. He will be interred
at Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society .

Mark E. MacDONALD

NEWPORT NEWS - Mark E. MacDonald M.D. died Aug. 9, 2010.
Born in 1952, he grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and dropped out of Ohio
State to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970-75. He retired from N.C.
National Guard in 1996 after 20 years of service.
He attended NCSU on the GI Bill, where he met his former wife, Libby
and graduated in 1980 with a Soil Conservation degree. In 1985, he entered
medical school at ECU and began practice as a family physician in 1992.
While in medical practice, he graduated from police academy and became a
sworn police officer with the Auxiliary unit in Newport News, Va., later
joining the Marine Patrol unit. He volunteered many nights with his partner
Rich Bell and enjoyed the camaraderie of numerous dedicated male and female
officers.
He had sparkling blue eyes to match his quick wit. He was a dedicated
father to Ann and Erin, encouraging the development of their sense of
adventure and fun through activities like donning bicycle helmets and life
jackets to walk through the remnants of a storm.
Mark is survived by his daughters, Ann and Erin; his mother, Jackie;
brother, Gary; aunt, Jean; and many, many family and friends who loved him.
The family would like Mark's friends to help them celebrate his life
from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at 312 Woodroof Rd. Newport News, Va. They
would cherish your written memories of Mark.

Ronald "Doc" Dwayne Allen, 57, passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, after an extended illness. Ronald was born Oct. 15, 1952, in Dallas. He was a proud former Marine. Ronald retired in 2007 after 20 years at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. He was an avid golfer, bowler and very interested in his family's genealogy. Survivors: Mother, Vinta Cox; father, Bert Allen; sisters, Brenda Paris and husband, Charles, and Paula Allen; and numerous cousins and extended family.

Dennis "Sonny" Houston Bradley Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at his home. Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Friday in Arlington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial: 11:30 a.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Arlington Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arlington High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 152578, Arlington, Texas 76015. Dennis "Sonny" was born at home in the community of Webb on Jan. 28, 1926. He was the middle child of Dennis Houston Bradley and Mabel Collard Bradley. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1942 and attended Arlington State College (now UTA). He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Dennis worked for Texas Electric Service Co. for 39 years at the Handley plant as a production supervisor. He married Mary Frances Ballweg in 1949. He and Mary were life mates and best friends. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in July 2009. Sonny was dedicated to taking care of his family and enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their East Texas lake house. He enjoyed staying in touch with his boyhood friends and his friends from the power plant helping to plan an annual lunch at Christmas each year. Sonny and Mary were blessed with two children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was a master Mason for over 50 years at Arlington Mason Lodge #438, in Arlington. Sonny was a member of the Arlington Old Timer's Club which is part of the Arlington Historical Society. He contributed information for Arlington's early history. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; his parents; his sister, Sammie Carter; sister-in-law, Betty Bradley; and brothers-in-law, Homer Carter and Phil Ballweg. Survivors: Daughter, Sylvia Barrett (Don); son, Tony Bradley (Linda); grandchildren, Kent Barrett and his son, Malachi, Grant Barrett, David and Jamie Bradley and their children, Mackenzie Joyner and Leah Bradley, Jesse Bradley, Paul and Bethany Bradley, and Andrew Bradley; brother, James Bradley of Dallas; brother-in-law, Henry Ballweg (Ruby) of Mansfield; sisters-in-law, Martha Durand (Joe) of Dexter, N.M., Patricia Gazewood (John) of Arlington; and many loving nieces and nephews

John W Butler, 77, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 15, 2010, after a short battle with lung cancer. Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3401 Bellaire Drive S., Fort Worth. Interment: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in John's memory may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church. Pallbearers will be Michael Butler, Hoot Thomas, Larry Norrell, Larry Glenn Norrell, Robert Norrell and Rein Lewis. John was born June 16, 1933, in Shawnee, Okla., to Mabel G. and Shirl P. Butler Sr. The family lived several places in Oklahoma throughout his younger years. He graduated in 1951 from Chickasha High School. That fall he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Korea with the 1st Marine Division beginning in 1952. He received an honorable discharge Aug. 26, 1955, as a staff sergeant. He graduated from Florida State University in June 1959 with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. He met and married Janice "Jan" Butler while managing the Glendale House Restaurant in Indianapolis, Ind. They moved to California in 1967 and then to Texas in 1968. It became home to them and their three daughters, each being his favorite. John enjoyed his family and friends, but especially his grandchildren. He was known for his sense of humor and infectious chuckle. He never met a stranger and was greatly loved by all. He will be missed. Survivors: Wife, Jan; daughters, Barbara Norrell of Whitewright, Valorie Lewis of Flower Mound and Teresa Thomas of Lubbock; grandchildren, Jordan Belcher, Matthew Belcher, Luke Norrell, Reagan Thomas and Presley Thomas; brother, Shirl P. Butler Jr. of Tulsa; and sister, Phyllis Johnson of Mancos, Colo.
