Am I the only one who thinks we rely far too heavily on technology? High tech weapons are one thing, but I can't get through half of the work day before being told, "check your e-mail and reply to my e-mail ASAP." Just tell me already! And don't get me started on cell phones. I just think you can't lead by e-mail, cell phones, and gadgets.

You can't go to the head-shed without every SNCO and Officer texting on a Blackberry. The younger crowd can't function without a laptop, IPod, digital camera, newest high-speed cell phone (with camera and internet), PS2 (whatever that is), online video games, big-screen HD plasma screen TV, and the list goes on.

I am still rockin' my 1995 model 27" TV. The only reason I have a cell phone now is the wife is prego and God help me if I can't figure out how to use it.

I can't disagree with you...

Staying "connected" comes with a high price... people are constantly working...don't know how to relax and smell the roses....there is little family time anymore...

The 50's were definitely a much simplier time..

I HATE CELLPHONES.....

Just b/c you have a flat screen tv, and not a box doesn't take anything away from the individual. There all nice accessories, but thats it accessories. I'm tired of seeing Marines constantly on there phone during duty, or bringing there phone with them to the field.

I hate my cell phone also, but it is needed in todays world.

My work told me that everyone in management would have a blacberry. OK I might have to take it, but I damn sure ain't gotta use it. Big Grin The thing sits charging 24/7. I've only made one call on it.

Think that's bad? Cellphones have become the secondary comm plan when training out in the field.

...I'm serious.

I plead guilty. Wink But I disagree that one "cannot function without them".

It's not a matter of not being able to function without them. It's about maximizing your time and becoming more efficient. It's called leverage.

I pay for 4 cell phones (I actually have 5), one laptop internet 3G wireless card. My iPhone has internet connectivity Wink (can't stand the phone however). I'm connected 24/7 (literally). Three of the phones are for family members so I can stay in contact with them.

And, I will say, my connectivity is very profitable. I'm quite good at multiplexing my time. I can be working, eating, sleaping, playing and having fun all the while I'm connected. I have never found that connectivity prevents or hampers me in any way, from my life before cell gadgets. Wink

Oh! And a cell phone saved my life once. This was about 15 years ago. I was picking up my daughter at gymnastics practice. She had nearly broken her foot and I took her to the emergency clinic. I carried her in and then back out to the car. On my way home, I blacked out on the freeway. I could tell something was wrong and pulled over to the side of the road, out in the middle of nowhere. I passed out and woke to the lights of police and fire trucks. My daughter had called 911 from my cell phone. Turns out I was bleeding internatlly and didn't realize it. I have not been without a phone since then.

We did a plt livefire range a couple days ago and comm being down as usual, doc comes over and gives us his cell number in case anybody gets hurt.

The image of somebody frantically pacing around holding his cellphone to his ear waiting for Doc to pick up while somebody lies bleeding on the ground just struck me as ludicrous.

Just gimme a damn landline phone and I'll take care of anything you want pronto. If I'm not near one it'll wait and a cell prob won't work out there yonder anyhow.

Sad but true. If you are in town taking care of busieness without a cell phone and need to make a call, it might take you all afternoon to find a pay phone. They are not used near as much anymore and the owners just remove them.

Our CO cancelled training once because I didn't have a cell phone. He said I should get one and I said, "if I am important enough to need a cell phone then I am important enough for the unit to pay for it." They didn't buy me one but we now have a unit funded ops cell phone. I thought that was a great comprimise.

Yes, I kind of worry about that, not many pay phones around anymore. Oh well, no matter, if I need to make a call, I'll bother someone in their house or business.

Yes. They were about the end days of the good 'ol Tom Sawyer days---which are no more.

I can relate.

Back in my time, upon reaching my first duty station after MOS school and married, I didn't have a telephone (E-3s don't make much) ....but it was "required" for off base living. So, I afforded one out of my own pocket ....and come income tax time counted it and the monthly bill as a work related expense.

I agree that cell phones are great in a pinch, for emergencies and such, but far too often, in my opinion, they are used as a crutch, replacing face to face communication.

Recently I was down at Ali Al Saleem and noticed in one office space that just about every Marine had a cell phone issued to him.

Up here in Al Asad most units have a few (about 3 on average) issued to them. How they choose who gets them is their call.

None of my Marines nor I have one and here's what I noticed...

- They are more prepared when they leave the office to go conduct business. Getting around this base can be difficult and nothing worse than getting to where you are going just to realize that you forgot something.

- They utilize an old fashioned process called human interaction.

- I don't have to listen to a slew of different ringtones.

- mainly though, I don't miss having one.

Cell Phones have replaced formations for us now that we are back in Lejeune. Anything that needs to be passed down, or if we are getting released for libo is sent via text messages.

That is freakin awesome. No more waiting in formation for 3 hours while everyone above a Sgt was still in the plt office "getting the word" (ie, bullsh*tting around). Its awesome you can be screwing off in your room and get the word via text that you can now strip off the monkey-suit and go into town for your well deserved drinks.

But yeah, being in college now i am fully indoctrinated into the cell phone necessity. No parties, study groups, or other "activities" can be coordinated without the use of a cell phone (or facebook, but that's a whole 'nother rant).

Oh, and just freaking TRY having a girlfriend without be able to constantly be in contact via your cell. There will be Hell to pay. Cell phone battery die? Doesn't matter--you're obviously cheating. Phone on silent by accident and left in your jeans? Obviously you are cheating. At the gym and have your cell in the bag in the locker? You are, of course, a cheating, lying, betraying ****.

Wow. I just realized that turned into a big rant about my ex. ****. My bad. Cell phones dependency sucks.....

I will never talk on a phone, when:
I'm in the bathroom!
Driving a car!
Walking anywhere!
Eating meals!
I always answer my phone, when I'm home. I do not screen calls. If the phone is busy, call back! I enjoy the computer but it is just a way to do things fast and get information. When I'm in a public place, I talk to no one but the person I'm with. If I'm alone, I talk to myself. Big Grin

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

I talk to myself when I am at home. My wife tells me to call someone who cares. Big Grin She is a handy piece of gear, though. I think I will keep her around awhile. Cool

Well, the wife gave me an IPod for my B-day. I had to pay a 19 year old comm bubba to set it up on my computer for me and show me how to use it. As bad as I hate to admit it, I like it. Big Grin Mostly for the Podcasts - can't get talk radio in Oki. Mad

Oh well... I suppose I will have to find something else to b*tch about.

Yeah? Well, jump into my shoes....

My police department has transitioned to a new incident reporting system, which we are required to use. It's not fully functional. They told us, in training, that it is supposed to be 100% in February. I'm not holding my breath. They kept telling us in training, "This will be online in Feb...".

Meanwhile, we are using a system that is T/U (tits-up)....

Plus, it takes a lot longer to do "paper", now, on an incident, vice scrathing a quick report out on a form, on a clip-board, in the patrol car...They did give us laptops, though.....

Makes it easy to be unavailable. I made sure that all my higher ups got my cell phone....with one digit wrong. No last minute duty or road guards for me. If something really important goes down I get it relayed through everyone else in the platoon with my correct number so I can't really get in trouble.

For the love of all that is good and holy!!! Does it ever stop? I just found out that there is a Nike shoe that can track your PT habits... Your route, pace, and time (among other things). So the wife just had to buy me the Nike+ (or whatever it is) shoes that goes with the IPod. As I understand it, if you hook up your shoes ( Roll Eyes) with your IPod, you can tell it to play your "power" song if you slow down on your run... Please, for the love of humanity, just shoot me now. Gun

I hear you Stubain481. "Does (it) ever stop?"

Stop it! ....only if you take yourself out of the loop. Take a day of rest from all electronic devices (and everthing else) every seven.
