I recently received orders to MSST Anchorage. A buddy of mine said, "Nice. You'll be a priority 3 when you leave". I looked it up in the personnel manual but didn't notice anything about MSST's. All it said was: OCONUS - Land = Priority 4. Is there any truth to MSST's being a priority 3 considering they deploy so much?

I am the TPO at MSST Anchorage, what rate are you,and yes we do leave the MSST as a PRI 3. You must have just gotten your orders today,I didnt see anything in CGMS today about incoming personel. You can shoot me an e-mail in global and I can find out who your sponsor will be.You are gonna enjoy MSST Anchorage,we have a great command and a good crew.

Thanks for the reply (and good news). I'm currently a priority 5. I'm taking the OSC billet and actually received my orders back in late December. My wife and I can't wait to get up there. She's originally from Michigan and this will be my third tour in Alaska.

Well good,As far as housing issues go pretty straight forward base housing on Elmendorf AFB or live out in town, either Eagle River,Chugiak,Palmer or Wasilla which get farther away from the MSST.The workdays are pretty good Artic hours 7-9 at the gym and 9-13 at work. But we have a new Co and Xo incoming this summer.Best of luck on the trip, enjoy some Papasitos in League City for me.

Yeah, I've put in for housing on Elmendorf. I don't want my wife and young daughter having to drive that much when the weather gets bad. Plus you've got everything you need right on base.

I'll definitely enjoy some Papasitos. If you haven't tried Henry's Great Alaskan Restaurant, definitely do so. They had one in Kodiak and it was my favorite place to eat. I heard they recently opened one in Anchorage.

yeah they have good food there, nice atmosphere. The base exchange is not to horrible, and the commissary is good. But the roads on Elmendorf seem to be a little worse than out in town with all the drivers with no winter driving experince. I would advise you not to take a house in the Chugach area of housing, they are old, small, cramped and plaged with problems, but he other areas ie; Silver Run,Moose Crossing and New Houston, are great some are around only 5 yrs old.Best of luck on the trip up.

Is there anything specific that you need to do, to go to an MSST unit? i applied for 2 of the jobs at the one in Anchorage. I'm just curious if there was something else that i needed to do besides apply for in through DA....?

It would help to attend the Deployable Operations Group Assessment and Selection. It shows the DOG community if you got what they want. It is a week long try out to see if they think you can make the cut. I attended last year and I highly recommend it.

Also keep in mind that the MSST mission is a deterent mission where you may not see your full outcome,or feel satisfied with it.Make sure that you pick a job that you will enjoy. The DOG assesment is geared more towards the MLE/FP teams within the MSST's,other than that unless you want to go to MSRT,you just apply for it in DA and a favorable command endorsement never hurts either.

I am at a MSST Team and the priority 3 leaving applies to anybody who deploys. Being the OSC you could deploy as the planning officer but if you stay back at the unit and never deploy it is going to be priority 4 OCONUS and Priority 5 in the states.

It's my understanding that I will deploy 2-3 days to check out a location and then 2-3 days again before the team gets there. Would this be enough to bump me up to a Pri 3? I guess I could always go the easy route and call the OSC I'm relieving but that would be too easy.

Yep, that was way too easy. I just got a reply and I'll be a Priority 3 leaving Anchorage.
