I was wondering if anybody could give some info
on getting onto the MSST.
I'm joining as an E-4 and I have to pick a guarented school/A-school job.
But I want to be a MSST. My recruiter hasn't given me much info on it.
What is the best rated job to get onto the MSST
I guess there is only these jobs open right now:
FS,GM,EM,ET,BM,OS
I don't want OS, & FS.
any help would be nice
thanks

Out of the jobs you listed, BM and GM would be your best bet to get assigned to a MSST. However, choosing one of those ratings wouldn't guarantee you getting assigned to a MSST. Your assignment officer would place you where the CG needs you the most. Ask your recruiter more about the MSST program. If they don't know, they should be able to find out.

It's not a "nonrate" job. A nonrate is either a Fireman or a Seaman. Being on a MSST team would be considered an "out of rate" billet. There are NO nonrates on MSST teams. Your best bet to be on a MSST team is to go BM or MK. However, if you decide to enlist be fully prepared to spend your entire enlistment never getting to an MSST. There is NO way to get a guaranteed MSST billet, you have to have graduated A school and request one first, then get accepted into it. The needs of the service come first.

A side note, if you want to be on a MSST team because you like law enforcement, they're not the only ones who do that type of stuff. I'm on a patrol boat right now and we do plenty of LE.

Ok thank you.
Are you a MK or BM.
I can't really decide which job i want MSST,(something like that) or AMT.
The reason I like the MSST (something like that) is I want to have some real action & fast pace stuff.
Thank you for your info.

I do believe there are oppportunities in the Army and Marines that should fill that desire for you.
Cool

If you have never been in any service you won't be joining as an E-4. You would go to boot camp and then maybe a garenteed A school and when you have the time in service and other requirements you might make E-4. If you join any other service I doubt that anyone here will really care. If you don't join the CG you would be the one who is wimping out. Idle B.S. won't get you very far here.

I think you are under the impression that MSST is actually a rate. It is a just a different assignment. I am at a MSST now and there are MK's, BM's, GM's, ET's, EM's, YN's, SK's, MST's as you can see you can try to get to a MSST if you are any of those rates. I recomend going to a big white boat to feel out all the different rates then choose. Good Luck.

What do you really know about the CG Maritime Safety and Security Teams, or the Maritime Security Response Teams, or any of the other CG units in the Deployable Operations Group (DOG)?

TALK WITH YOUR RECRUITER!

In what way are you enlisting as an E-4? There aren't that many ways to do that.

TALK TO YOUR RECRUITER!

The needs of the Service will dictate how and where you end up.

Come in as a non-rate and learn ALL of the CG jobs before you decide which rating to become, and then strive for a DOG unit. It's NOT up to you...Needs of the Service.

Good luck!

You should really pick a job that you will be happy with. Don't limit yourself to just one type of unit. BM's and GM's do alot of the heavy lifting at the MSST's. Go to your fist unit and work hard. Your hard work is seen by your Chief and you will get everything you work for.

Thank you for your info.

I realize your post is from way back in Nov but I wanted to reply to you and anyone else that may be considering joining the USCG.

I was in the USCG for 6 yrs, 2 of them on a 378' cutter patrolling the Caribbean and the last three in the Florida Keys. Later, I drove patrol boats for US Customs for 17 yrs in South FL.

Many people think that work is all "fast paced and exciting" but you need to know the reality of it. It's not like the garbage you see out of Hollyweird.

Many, many, many days and/or nights are boring. You go out, you hunt for something to get into but so often is the case, you find nothing.

Then there's the occasional days or usually nights that are filled up with a wild boat chase, seizure and arrests. When you do get into something like that, hopefully the feeling you get will carry you over to the next one which may be a loooong way off.

That's the reality of it. Now, I am not trying to speak for the MSST's. My brother is in one in GA but I don't know what his day to day activities are. None of my business.

Just do the best you can with listening to the advice of the Coasties who do the jobs now and those of us that have done it in the past.

Best of luck to the OP and any other potential future Coast Guard personnel.

Don
