Hello Coasties, first of all i would just like to introduce myself, Im John Ogden and schelduled to leave for Boot camp Oct 16. I couldnt be more excited. Smile
I was wondering what more that i could do to try and get on to a msst unit.
I currently hold distinguished graduate awards from Frontsight Firearms Training Institute with the Sig Sauer P229 40 cal, and I am a padi certified Rescue Diver.
I recently quit my job to train full time so I would have a advantage going in to boot camp. It is my absolute dream to work with on the MSST unit because i have a distinct passion for Drug Interdiction.
I currently have guranteed A school to become a BM. Does anyone have any suggestions as to things i can do in the mean time to make myself a more effective canidate?
Thanks a lot guys.

First thing, as a non-rate you will not get stationed at a MSST. Second, my recommendation is to get some experience in the fleet so you have a better understanding of the Coast Guard as a whole. MSST's aren't going to leave, they will be there when you are ready. MSST does mostly Anti-terrorism and force protection.

Congratulations and welcome to the Coast Guard Family. Good luck in boot camp and BM "A" school. My suggestion to you is keep your nose clean and give them both your all. Although we all would like for our BM3s to have worldly (CG) experience, MSSTs have approx 12 BM3 billets. So, you can go to a MSST directly from "A" School, IF there are billets available at the time you graduate. Let the school staff know your desires in the beginning and see what happens. But, get through boot camp first.

Thanks guys, Is there anything else that I could be doing in the 3 months to come to boost my resume persay. I was talking to my recruiter and he said that the combat training i have had will show a commitment to the field that i desire to work in but is there anything else above and beyond that in which would be a good idea?

John, good luck in bootcamp.

Whenever someone asks about something that might help them in future law enforcement with the Coast Guard, one thing I always suggest is to take a Spanish course.

I grew up in NH, took Spanish in high school but being an ignorant punk, I never thought I'd use it so I didn't pay nearly enough attention. Three years later, I ended up stationed in the FL Keys and regretted not paying more attention. Go figure, after the Coast Guard I got on with Customs and spent the next 17 yrs in FL on the patrol boats.

If only I had put the effort into learning Spanish, it would have been a huge benefit to my boardings for questioning suspects for for the boarding team and my safety.

I realize October is not far away but thought I would suggest it anyways. There are those books, "Spanish for Dummies" with a CD inside.

Again, I wish you luck.

Oh, I just realized, Oct 17th will be my 25th anniversary of when I went off to Cape May! Big Grin

I believe it may have been the first boarding I ever did. It was back in '83 for the Cutter Chase, WHEC-718.

(Chase, Guantanimo Bay, Cuba, 1983)

I was the shotgun man on the boarding team while we were onboard a large fishing boat in the Caribbean. We kept watch over the crew of the boat as others in the boarding team searched down in the engine spaces.

A large area of concrete was in the bilge that the captain had claimed was for ballast. While the team drilled into the concrete, members of the crew were discussing, in Spanish, jumping us. Another SN on the team, a large white country guy from Texas, spoke Spanish but never let on that he did so. When he overheard their plotting, he warned the rest of us.

Our boarding team only went in a certain depth into the concrete but came up empty. We departed but it was really a blow to our ego when we received word later that a 95' WPB reboarded the boat, went deeper into the concrete and found a large load of marijuana.

If It's not too late, you might want to think about going GM. I only say this because the A school has been flooded with MSST Billets. I almost HAD to go to one, and I'm not into LE. Just wanted to let you know. I hope you get the rate you want. there are some MSST opportunities for GM's though. Good luck at basic!

If you really want to go to an MSST, then when you get to "A" School let them know you want an MSST. If you dont mind the cold I suggest you ask for MSST Anchorage 91111. I am a yeoman stationed there and I see a lot of BM's coming from "A" school. Good luck in bootcamp. Also the MSST units do not use the sigs. We still use the 9mm Beretta

Do you know if the MSSTs plan on switching to the Sigs soon?

As soon as we shoot up all the remaining 9mm ammo from the entire Coast Guard.

The best tactical training I ever had (Customs) was 3 wks at Silver Flag Alpha (Nellis AFB) at Indian Springs, NV. It was 3 wks of "High Risk Encounter Tactical Training" (HRETT).

I know, I know...wrong type of camies....

I wish the Coast Guard had something similar for the boarding teams...maybe they do, I don't know.

Have you looked into being a GM? Just curious.

It all depends on what you want to do, MSST= security zones MLE/AT-FP, stations/cutters= drug interdiction. Remember, all the "high speed, low drag" stuff comes after you learn how to be in the CG, the stuff you can't learn in bootcamp or "A" school. As a BM you will start by getting boat crew and boarding team member then have to start working on your coxswain quals since you need it for promotion to BM2. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Also, Don, can we please have one forum with out all your old sea stories and 300 pictures that don't apply to the topic at hand. I respect your service but sometimes it has nothing to do with anything even related.

The original poster asked for suggestions on getting himself prepared...I suggested Spanish and posted a photo of the Chase incase he was not familiar with the type of cutter I was referring to when I told of the boarding in the Caribbean.

The original poster brought up training in Nevada, I replied with training in Nevada that I thought would be good for the Coast Guard and added a photo incase the original poster was familiar with it.

Why are you offended? You are more than welcome to put me on your "ignore list". Just click on tools but type in my name.

Maybe I have gotten a little carried away with photos lately but the only reason I started posting many with my replies is that so many on here doubt the experience of anyone adding to a discussion. To avoid being challenged on my experience, I simply include a photo. See the K-9 discussion where it all started. When challenged on your knowlege, throw up some photos and all those doubting posts disappear.

thanks marine BM, I would really rather do more drug interdiction then security zones but I hear MSST does both. Im sure I will learn a lot more once I actually get to bootcamp/a school etc... AND don i like your pictures, ha, but as far as GM goes i looked into that fairly heavily but from the buddies i currently know that are enlisted in the coast guard they're telling me to go BM and it looks to be the most versatile which is more or less what I am going for. If I dont make a carrear out of this i will more than likely do law enforcement afterwards and from what i have seen that is more or less what a bm does, he just has more responsibilities and im kinda a high stress oriented individual. any thoughts don?
