I'm currently waiting on my Rank Determination package to go through and had a few questions. Providing my package goes through the want it to, or at least close to, I am entering the Coast Guard as a Gunners Mate. I have recently discovered the MSST's and seeing as there is very little info on the internet about the programs, I am hoping to get some information from someone on here. Does the MSST fall under the Deployable Operations Group, or is it it's own entity? Also what is the training like? I'm not looking for Classified or Restricted training info just a down and dirty barney-style brakdown of the training. I know that its in Camp Lejeune, but was wondering what the actual training evolutions entail. Also what is the physical portion like? I am in good shape myself but was wondering if its some absolutely ridiculous out of my league physical conditioning navy seal stuff. That and I have talked to and noticed on here, some rather shall we say "Chunky" MSST members. I am aware that I should spend time in my rate and get on a cutter or two first before I apply for the program, but would like to get a head start on what I am in store for should I decide to go through it all. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the MSST Teams fall under the Deployable Operations Group. Some of our training is in Camp Lejeune, but much of it is hands on training at the unit. The physical portion isn't hard, it just requires effort. You are afforded plenty of time each week to work out and stay in shape. We generally have a quarterly PT test to make sure people are staying where they are supposed to be. As far as the "chunky" members, if they are over their max allowable weight, they are held accountable. For the specifics on the training, it is hard to go over it all. There are different departments within the MSST Teams, such as waterside, support, and MLE / Force Protection. Each department has their own types of training with their own training plans associated. I'm not a GM, so I can't offer you any rating specific advice, but you could always call a MSST Team and ask to speak to one of their GM1's. Hope if all works out for you.
