My husband has been through a lot to join the military. He had to lose nearly 200 lbs at the age of 38 to get in. Before he left for afghanistan, he had gained a lot of weight. He probably needs to lose about 30 or 40 lbs. I was horrified that the national guard had not made him lose it when he was at camp Shelby, the last training site before going overseas. I worry about him tremendously. Maybe it will make a difference, maybe not. But it seems like there is a lot of rugged terrain to be covered. All the soldiers should be at the height of fitness!

All military members must meet fitness standards and it is an INDIVIDUAL responsibility. Your husband could have administration action and potentially be kicked out of the military if he fails to adhere to military standards. If your husband failed to keep fit, that is on him. He WILL lose weight and become more fit on his deployment. God speed.
