> There are those who discount the views of the troops on the ground - that they lack the strategic view from 20,000 feet. (I remember Richard Belzer saying something to that effect on "Real Time with Bill Maher" a while back.) > There may be some truth to that, but it's the troops on the ground winning the tactical victories that contribute to the strategic victory - as long as they're not cut off from behind here at home (NOT that that's ever happened...). If those doing the fighting and the dying believe that what they're doing still makes sense, I'd give their opinion a lot of weight. (As I recall from the RVN vets I served with, the closer you were to the fighting, the more you realized that the war didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.) > And I'll buy the second round. |
