Hello,
Just a quick question for the female soldiers/Marines/etc out there. What MOS did you pick and why? I'm going to be signing up for the Marine Reserves, and am having difficulty deciding which MOS to choose or what area I would like to go into. I like to stay active, so I want something that will keep my that way. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

No offense, but I'd strongly suggest that you change your profile name, unless that is what you do as a "govt employee", as your profile states. And yes, it is a big deal as to what you choose as your profile name. Meaning, don't say that you are something in the military when you are not. Thank you.
Also, how you well you do in your ASVAB will either narrow down or open up options for you. Folks can give you all the advice that they can, but you can't do anything with it until after you take the ASVAB.

As far as what MOS I picked as a female in the Army, I had a problem with that when I first enlisted because at that time the MOS which I wanted was the Administrative Assistant MOS's. The only problem was that those MOS's were filled up at that time by other female soldiers or even male soldiers, therefore, I took the next available MOS for me at that time which was 57H which was entitled Terminal Operations Coordinator. This MOS basicly entailed my working on a big yellow crane near a seaport with big ships docked at the docking station. I had to wear steel toed boots and a hard hat.

Even though I chose this MOS to get into the military, I was told that I could cross train into another MOS once I signed up for that MOS for about a year or so. Sure enough, I was able to cross train into another MOS which I wanted when I first signed up. I cross trained into the 71L MOS which was Administrative Clerk/Supervisor and later on I went to a military school to become a 71D which was Legal Clerk/NCO and I even began cross training into 71E which was Court Reporter.

I am sure by now that there are more MOS's which female soldiers can choose from now especially since the military is basically computerized now. Remember, no matter what MOS you chose to go into female or not you are still going to be involved in some type of combat training because we are at War now. Gun Wink

ssg91B - You've been on this site long enough. You know the profile name cannot be changed. It's what a member states on their profile (as far as saying that you are something you are not) that matters. She would have to cancel the account and open up a new one. There could be a number of reasons as to why she chose that... Smile

Well, it appears that her account is gone. Maybe she did cancel it and open up a new one. If she is still here, this is what I would say to her:

AH - As far as MOS. ssg91B is correct. You need to take the ASVAB first to see where your qualifications lie. After that, carefully consider your interests, your strengths and weaknesses and what you would like to do about them all. That will help you tremendously...

I was 71N, later changed to 88N. I worked my way up in logistics, went to many schools, travelled and was able to use my linguistic abilities when working with the Host Nations. For me it was the best choice, but everyone is different...

As a guy and military man for over 25 years, I see the best in both genders. In the Chaplaincy, the finest enlisted personell were the ladies with an advantage over we men. They have insight of compassion and wisdom beyond most men. While I was in Civil Engineering, a certain lady which was ultra feminine and never afraid of tough hard physical work would put most men to failure. My present job in pharmacy, I see how the female mind is capable of juggling multi tasking where us guys need more remedial. We may be different but still equal. - 1 Cor 13

Obviously it matters the most after the asvab. As far as myself,I wanted 88M-I also could not get a school slot at the time I wanted to enter.I took 2nd choice-92Y,I went to Ft Leisure(Lee-haha)& I was assigned as the co. armor for an ordnance unit my first 3 yrs..
So,lots of living in the field{I am a cowgirl-so I actually enjjoyed it a lot)& fun and exciting things,(since supply operates 24/7),and I was able to eventually drive for every company I was ever in & also a lot of various vehicles(to include a top-less missile carrier during a hurricane b/c we were short of vehicles when called & we were getting ready to disban the hawk at the time & go to stinger,so it was a bad time for a hurricane to visit the area I was assigned to at the time, & so my superior & I took that vehicle & swam the whole drive for hrs-pretty funny actually). I also took the 31C school(comm) & then I had a ball becoming a mail clerk(while in Iraq.)It was the most wonderful job I could have landed, except for convoys,I never minded, just understood how dangerous they were & saw men and women refuse to go on them(which I cannot blame some-due to the nasty region we were in all yr),but to see some of the lowest ranking enlisted to highest ranking brass(I was also in charlie co)smile after our roughest days sometimes, was the most rewarding thing ever for me.
They would receive pics from home & open them on the spot & share them as well as enjoy goodies we would put out when we were not on a convoy.
When the holidays were approaching and we knew we would be there through them,it was fun to set up for our reliefs like a real Santa with some goodies from home we all had sent to us or received from american supporters, which was greatly appreciated.
We even gave up our nice little buildiings-that took a long time to get for sleeping 1/4's out of the nasty dusty tents for wks on end-that we started out with & nothing was there when we 1st arrived in that area,(nice cat holes for everyone)meeeow!
By the time they began to arrive, there was 2 new gyms & a coffee shop, nice little px & 2 dining facilities & more than just port-a-potties waitng for them,as we slept in laundry trailers the last several wks as they came in & I felt proud to do so,stuffed like sardines & smellin ea others gas bombers at night in your nose,it was worth the fact we were gettin ready to come home & they were only arriving.I actually loved that part of serving in war.

Ladies, I must say that I salute each and everyone of you for being able to acquire your desired MOS's. This goes to show that we, as female soldiers, know what type of MOS's we are suited for and we strive hard to perform our duties in these MOS's to the best of our abilities. Way to go female soldiers!!!

I am a 46Q, Public Affairs Specialist Writer. I work on military newspapers, writing stories, taking photos and laying out our monthly publication. I chose it because I've always been an okay writer, and my mom convinced me that being a chaplains assistant was basically like being an over rated secretary.

Your question is what should a female choose for her MOS... that seems like a really ODD question.

Do what you would like to do - that your ASVAB scores show that you are qualified for - and that, gender-speaking, the DOD allows you to do.

I was a Yeoman in the Navy - it's the equivalent of an executive assistant, and I absolutely loved it. But I also chose arduous sea duty (to include a war ship) because I liked that too.

Do what you like - and what you think will be the best translation in civilian jobs for you when you get out.

2A5 - Aircraft Maintenance Specialist. I wanted helicopters, but I got heavy acft instead. (Oh well. I'm over it.)

Advice from a crusty old TSgt: Take your ASVAB, note the areas that you score high in, and consider those jobs. You'll be happier... then again, if you absolutely have to do something else, RESEARCH that job fully. ANNOY your recruiter about it. take a tour with your nearest base and ANNOY the people who work in that job/MOS.. so you know the full poop on it. You'll be glad you did.

When I originally enlisted I was a 76V (which was later changed to 92A-logistics). I hated my job so the first chance I got to reclassify I did. I am now a 15P (flight operations) and enjoy what I do.
