If you don't make your weight v/s height you will be taped. This consists of measurements taken of your neck, waist and hips. The measurements are then put into a formula and divided to come up with your body fat percentage. You are allowed a certain amount of body fat per age:

Maximum allowable percent body fat standards in accordance with AR 600-9 are as follows:
Age Group: 17–20
Male (% body fat): 20%
Female (% body fat): 30%

Age Group: 21–27
Male (% body fat): 22%
Female (% body fat): 32%

Age Group: 28–39
Male (% body fat): 24%
Female (% body fat): 34%

If you get your body fat done at a gym using electronic means or calipers it will most likely come back about 5 - 10% less than you will get when you get taped. The electronic body fat measurer told me I was 20% and the Army taping system says I am 31% but I make my weight so it really doesn't matter. If you make your weight you don't have to get taped. Much of the time if you have to get taped you will not be within the body fat standards for your age.

Watch what you eat, do lots of cardio and run, run, jog and run until you make weight. It will save you a lot of heartache in the end.

Army-

FYI- Your recruiter has the answer to this question. Please talk to your recruiter they can go over the regulations with you.

ABG is correct however in regards to taping. However MEPS won't cut you any slack!!!!

If you want the the best advice on how to lose weight (the healthy way), and keep it off, then you should consult your doctor for a nutritional assesstment. (Nutritional assesstment involves the an individuals food/ nutrient intake, lifestyle and medical hx.

Ask to be referred to a dietician/nutritionist... If need be..

I encourage this as a doctor, that way in the future you will have better overall health- lower risk of disease and healthy body weight, feeling and looking better, having more energy!!!

Good Luck!!

i believe they reweigh you before you ship to make sure you are still within standards. if you are worried about being over the weight then get with your recruiter and get on a weight management and have your recruiter do a tape test to see if you are over the BF%.

Oops- sorry polarbeargirl.. (thought I hit the quote button for Armykitty)...(I obviously need sleep Big Grin)

SIGH*

Army- Were not mind readers. In future, when posting a question give all the the details (facts). Otherwise, you might not get the response you are looking for....

So far as your weight issue,(to reiterate) YOU still have to meet standards. You need to address this issue. Please speak to your recruiter.

Review the above post(s). They contain good advice.

Good Luck!

When I talked to my recruiter, I had to lose so much before I could even try, being male didnt matter, you have to meet requirements..

Either way, being heathly is important, one thing that helped me was drinking lots of water, makes you feel better and helps with hungar pains, one thing I will not recommend is starving yourself, never works and if it does, its a short lived solution that can hurt you.

Great advice all around..
