i wear glasses and was wondering if i will be issued military glasses instead of the glasses i usually wear. i heard from some people that the glasses are big, brown and bulky and really ugly looking, but some people said the glasses have changed and are smaller and not as ugly, i was just wondering if i would be issued different glasses then what i have. i also wanted to know about when u get gas masks and things, how do u wear ur glasses inside of it, or do they have the lense made special for your eyesight. any help would be great. thanks. pvt. s
If I had to guess, the glasses you will receive are the same issued to other branches.
Lucky me, didn't need any. Indeed they are ugly. On the bright side, you will be too busy to worry about looking pretty.
Nevertheless, I believe those glasses have been updated, but most folks just trade them for nicer ones upon completion of basic training.
As for masks, when I first joined, we wore the older MCU-2/P, for which inserts were your actual military issued glasses secured with a thich rubber band. We have since upgraded gas masks to the M-40 and (in Navy Seabee battalions, at least) medical personnel are equipped to issue inserts to all of you wearing prescription glasses. The new inserts are less bulky and attach to the inside of the mask.
thanks so much for the help. i was just wondering and i dont care how i look i just want to be able to see, and cant wait to work my butt off in bct. thanks again for the response., very helpful pvt. s
When you get into basic they will adminster an eye exam and get you a prescription. The glasses have change from the nasty ones they used to have to something much better. (I wear mine around in the real world.)
As far as the gas mask, you'll be given some inserts to slip in your mask, or you can order them via supply with a copy of your prescription. That way your glasses are attached to your mask, and you only need worry about taking off your existing glasses prior to splipping on your mask.
As a glasses encumbered Iraq Vet, I strongly recomend you get LASIC as soon as possible. My glasses were always dirty, falling off, in the way, etc. Shooting with the IBA, weapon and glasses is a serious problem for me.
