i joined the navy last week and i leave for basic training 20090609. i am so pumped i hardley can wait. i will be a quartermaster. this website does really help out a lot. btw some dbag told me i would be harassed and i shouldnt join i almost punched him in the face.
I just joined the Army (active duty), I ship in 2 weeks. I've heard the same things but you can get harassed anywhere in life and working any job in the world, I wouldn't worry about it Good luck
yeah your right. that guy just ticked me off. i wanted to turn around and tell im serving your country so you can say things like that. But i just told him he didnt know what he was talking about.
Much of it depends on your definition of harrassment. You certainly will get hit on a lot. There will probably be off color jokes in your presence, and you may even be the butt of a few. But getting groped or told to put out for promotion is not very likely.
I swear in Thursday and they gave me a ship date of January 2009. I wish it was sooner but...I guess that's out of my control. I've seen recruits come in the recruiters office and get sent out so quick it made my head spin. I don't get it??? I was told if I wanted to change my MOS I could go sooner but I can't seem to find anything in the area units that I'm interested in doing. I got an 88 on the ASVAB and was told I could choose whatever MOS I wanted to (other than those limited to men). I feel like I'm being penalized now because of what I chose (38B-Civil Affairs Spec.). Just disappointed is all...

I could be wrong, but my guess as to why your ship date is so far out would be due to school availability. The MOS you chose may either be booked full and the next available class isn't until mid 2009 so they plan on you shipping off to basic early 2009. Or, their aren't many people choosing that MOS so they are waiting for enough people to start classes so ship dates are pushed back to fill all the slots. That is why you were told you could choose a different MOS and ship earlier. The military doesn't want to 'waste' the money to ship you now and then pay to to wait for a class to form or pay you to wait for an open slot several months away.
