I was at the Bertholf's commissioning and found it interesting that the cutters are being named after legends. I know they have the Waesche and the Stratton named, great choices.
I can think of no greater legend in the modern Coast Guard than Master Chief Tom McAdams. Seems to me that this would be a great name for one the new NSC's. Jon |

I think Ray Evans would be a fine name for a cutter too.

Enlisted as well Officer names should be considered. All of us could make a list of names.
Two off-topic questions, if I may; MastersMate; How is your renewal coming along? Are you still making the trans-Pacific delivery? |

Ray,
The renewal is going terribly. Two and one half months since it was submitted and the only info is posted as "being evaluated". The delivery job went down the tubes because of this. Basically about 50-60 days sailing at $800 a day is down the crapper. It is as though the C.G. placed a big A.H. (azzhole) on the folder and it is the bottom of some pile somewhere. As for naming the cutters after enlisted, wholeheartedly agree, but I'd wonder how many " old Guard" CoastGuardsmen could meet the core values that the present seems to hold everyone accountable to. We all know that "officers" of old were the "annointed ones" and could/would never do anything less than upstanding . |

What about LCDR Quentin Walsh, Navy Cross Winner.
After D-Day lead a joint US forces unit of about 50 that talked the German Commander of a fortress at Cherbourg, France in to surrendering, 470 some German military and rescuing 50 captured American paratroopers. OR BMC Richard Patterson, CGC PT WELCOME, whose action the night the PT WEL+COME was attacked by FRIENDLY US Air Force fighters, saved both the remaining crew and the cutter. OH!Yeah, also one ungrateful S*B civilian photographer, Tim Page. Jack |

Two and one half months? Way too long to wait. Not like it's your original issue with a lot of information to evaluate. Too bad this has cost you a fantastic opportunity. You have a good reason to be upset. My last long delivery was from East Boothbay to Sault St. Marie for Washburn and Doughty. It was a good trip through the St. Lawrence. After that I did one from Baltimore to Boothbay Harbor. Good luck with it all. |

Damn, Damn, and Triple Damn
Joe, that is the very trip I was hoping for. Was hoping it was for two deliveries, c'est la vie.. Congrats on finishing all the hoops and rings. I damned near got gray hair after taking that exam many years ago. Heard about those guys that just got the license for sending in the box tops. I wonder HOW MANY have gon out just like that. Well Done. |

Thanks.
I'm glad you read my post. I just deleted it. I figured that I should wait until I had the paper in hand before I gave my critique of the process. Good luck with your ordeal - I'm sure we'll cross paths some time. |

Wait til it is in your hand exactly. I kind of suspect the "words" I had with the counter help have a lot to do with any delay I'm encountering.

Two and half months for a license renewal? Seems to me we used to walk in and have it renewed the same day. If this is the kind of service professional seamen are receiving from the Coast Guard these days, something needs to be done. The license is a man’s livelihood! Maybe someone from headquarters with a little horsepower reading this thread will look into it. If I thought I had been personally singled out, I would be on the phone to my Senator!

I'll keep counting to ten, and ride this out until the paper is back in my possession.

I believe that Captain R.W. Durfey, USCG, then Commanding Officer, USCGC RUSH (WHEC-723), Serving as Officer in Tactical Command, Joint US and RVN Forces on the night of 21 / 22 November, 1970 was awarded the Silver Star for service in the successful stopping and sinking of a North Vietnamese trawler, attempting to infiltrate the Republic of South Vietnam, in the area of the Mouth of the Mekong delta. This has probably been posted here before, but after being available on the net (hosted on private website) for the past few years, CAPT Lutz's personal history of SHERMAN's WESTPAC deployment can now be viewed on the CG Historian's site...

How about PO3 Bruckenthal? I think he is more deserving then most that have been chosen already.... It would also be the least the CG could do for the family he left behind.

Check the list Mastere's Mate posted above and explain to me why Bruckenthal should go to the head of the line...... |

I never mentioned the people on "MastersMate's" list.....
Is that the official list? Just curious... This message has been edited. Last edited by: USCGDC903, |

The list of senior decorations is from the CG Historians web site. The Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and the Silver Star are the senior combat decorations. I'll go with a guess that those decorated would count as wartime "legends".
The suggestion of Rear Admiral Billard is in keeping with the "legend" class of cutter. He guided the CG during the Prohibition "Rum Running" years. Would probably qualify as a legend. All are wildazzed guesses at the names for future "legend" class cutters. Nothing more & nothing less. |

Two Coast Guard leaders who made significant contributions to maritime safety and environmental protection worldwide are William M. Benkert & William F. Rea III. Their accomplishments and impact on todays world are lengendary.
Both were Cutter Commanding Officers and both also made their mark at the United Nations througn the International Maritime Organization. They also mentored numerous other Coast Guard leaders. Either one would be a great choice to have a cutter named after them. |

No, it's not an official list. My point was those listed should be recognized first, as the decorations awarded them are all senior to a Bronze Star for good reason. It's about time the CG steps up and gets more aggressive about naming cutters after the war heroes that have served, as opposed to Commandants or the various Secretaries of Transportation, Treasury and DHS. |
