I'm interested in the progress, or lack thereof or other developments, in the update/overhaul program for the 110 footers. MATAGORDA was the first, but what is the current status and thinking? This was to be an interim effort to extend the 110footers until the follow-on design could become real. Are we pushing onward, or what?

Last I heard the program is for the 110s is at a complete halt due to design and hull incomparability. This may be complete scuttlebutt though.

Neidenberger:
The progress is they are sitting in Baltimore at the CG Yard, stripped down, collecting dust. Too many hull problems, shaft alignment problems, issues with logistics, Deepwater equipment vs. legacy equipment, classified comms issues, etc. Last I heard, on my old 123' there was a crack in the fuel tank found after she went to emergency drydock for engine repairs. That was one of the last straws that brought an end to all of them.

Was there not some little project in the works for a sort of mid-life tweek/yard rehab to the -rest of the 110s ??

A minor miracle that a 10 year hull, that got a magic HQ wand waved over it in the early 1990s, and suddenly was good for 15 years. And coming up at the end of that road rapidly.

If the 110s, as a class, worked fairly well, have Bollinger puke out another 20 or so and run em for the next 15 years. Keep it simple and cheap.

I am on a 110 right now and we are scheduled to go to MEP in Baltimore this summer 08. It's the midlife, and supposed to be a complete haul out. There have been a few before is the Naushon out of Ketchikan, AK is going through it right now and the us (Anacapa) in August. Supposedly it's a 7-10 month process.

Thanx for that info, appreciated.

Just kind of starts a little head and azz scratchin'. Pulling a mid life, on a hull near the end of life. When the 210s & 378s went through that re-hab, back 20 years ago or so, seems like the end result was 40 year old vessels, according to their COs a few years ago, ready to cave in on themselves. I recall the 95' WPB mid life was cancelled because of geriatric small ship hulls.

Should prove interesting if it shakes out. Good luck with it.

I am on the TYBEE, the first '110 to come out of the MEP. We all reported in dec. of 06, went to the boat at baltimore in january, and did not get commissioned until april. All in all, I think the program was good. We have been running for 6 months now, and so far there has been no major problems on board. The few problems are electronics related. We had new fins put on made of a fiberglass composite, and when we went to maine, ran over a few lobster pots in the fog, and now we have grooves worn in the fins about 2" deep. Might be going back to get the old steel fins put back in. The MEP I feel is a good program for the 110 fleet. I think it was the nantucket that the yard replaced over 2000 square feet of hull plating. So the MEP is definitely good for these worn out hulls.

I suggest you all read the Operations Security (OPSEC) manual before you make any more comments regarding operational units.

Only 170+ Anacapa google hits, I didn't do the rest as it's easy to find contracts or enough tidbits to figure things out. Only one produced anything of intel value halfway through. 110 yard contract. Unless the info was "encrypted" in it's orignal form, talking about "past" items wouldn't be a OPSEC violation, however, future plans/ports/dates/movements etc.. is frowned upon (encrypted or not) JMO but I'm retired. What the heck do I know.. Roll Eyes But good catch there OS..

Everytime I drive by those 8 beautiful 123's I shake my head. They do look good. What a waste.

Stationing in Baltimore kinda sucks due to the large size, area, etc.. Sometimes it is cool though to see some of the ships that come through here. Like the Eagle that is on blocks right now.

Lets hope maybe Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine can get a slice of the new PB pie. Gets some of the stuff away from Northrup and spreads around the wealth. Plus, BIW builds a great ship.

Hopefully,

While BIW hasn't built a CG cutter for some time as the article mentions, BIW did conduct FRAM four of the WHEC-378s (HAMILTON, CHASE, DALLAS and GALLATIN) and there used to be a CG RIO office there in the '80s. So, they do have some recency w/ CG work.
