DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- President Barack Obama made a midnight dash to this air base Wednesday to honor the return of fallen soldiers, absorbing the ultimate cost of war as the United States endures its deadliest month of the Afghanistan campaign.

On a clear fall night, Obama flew by Marine One helicopter to Dover Air Force Base to greet the flag-draped cases of 18 Americans killed in action this week.

After landing, the president, wearing a dark topcoat, got into a motorcade to a base chapel, where he met privately with families of the fallen Americans. He had arrived on the base at 12:34 a.m. Thursday and was expected to be back at the White House before dawn.

Obama was taking part in a solemn process, to unfold in four movements: the transfer of the fallen 15 soldiers and three Drug Enforcement Agency agents from the back of the C-17 to a transport vehicle to a base mortuary.

As part of the official party, Obama was to go on the plane, each time witnessing silently as a chaplain said a prayer for the fallen, the family, the country and the war effort.

He’s been all over the place in the last few days.

Also, I support Obama, but there is just something wrong with that picture and him saluting......maybe it’s just me!? I understand he would not know military protocol (since he never served) and I don’t expect him to, but WTH is his staff doing? Either way, kudos for flying up to Delaware and showing respect for our fallen comrades.!

I don't begrudge the President his salute. He does it well and conveys respect. I'll fault him on issues ... but won't cheap-shot him on this. Respectfully done, Mr. President.

This does highlight two things of secondary interest - the flights still arive at night so perhaps it isn't about "hiding our dead" after all ... and only 1 out of 18 families permitted media coverage.

May our fallen rest in peace and their families be consoled.

Thank you President Obama for showing respect and class. Where were Barney Frank, Murtha, Reid and Pelosi?

I have to be honest, if President Obama had been doing this consistently since he took office, it would be one thing...but since he's being criticized for his lack of an Afghan decision, I feel that this is a photo-op. I am not being disrespectful of our President. I'm only looking at the patterns. For example, the Dr.s in the Rose Garden with the lab coats that were handed oiut by White House staff. Just my opinion.

Respect notwithstanding, is it an appropriate use of the President's time to "do this consistently"? Did Bush (either of them)?

Of course it's an appropriate use of the President's time. To me, it would've been more significant if this were something that he'd been doing all along, especially when there weren't cameras present.

...The issue here is that the "man' did go, and did render what is to be a salute to those that gave the ultimite sacrifice for this nation,...

...I believe that by doing such, He will have no choice, but to feel the pain of those that he was there to offer his condolences to, and his 'outlook" although he never served will be different in the coming days, months, and years. It is sombering to witness any funeral procession, let alone a military one,..

...One can only "hope' that he will feel a different viewpoint towards our brethern from now on, and the deceisions that have to be made will be scrutinized with conscience highly favoring such,...

...May they rest in peace, Amen,...

Quite frankly, IMPO, he was correct to render the salute. After all, he is the Commander-in-Chief. If for some reason I had to get back in uniform and I saw him I would salute him.

As to the actual event, I see it as him also taking a moment to get a personal reminder that regardless of his decision on the proposed surge, someone will give all in the performance of their duties. Hopefully his decision will minimize the losses.

I'd say President Obama has a lot better salute than MG Wright ... by a long country mile.

No matter what frame of mind he was in when he arrived at Dover, I've a pretty good idea what his frame of mind was when he left after witnessing the solemn and sobering reminders of the human cost of presidential decisions. Methinks it will be a night that is NOT quickly forgotten or set aside.

I give kudos to the President for going there and showing his condolences to the family.. Its a sobering moment I'm sure to see how your decisions can effect the families and lives of those that serve this country.

That said only reason President Obama looks better saluting is because he doesn't have to wear that gay ass girl scout hat.

I heard that the family of one of the fallen heros had authorized the press to cover their loved one's return home.

Obama should have his hand on his heart. He's never spent one second in the military, and that is the proper civilian salute to both the Flag and the Dead....

I had heard that the wh invited them.

If it was both I would have as CinC asked the press not to photog me and give the family that respect. In other words in aint about me.

You “heard” wrong, cuz the WH cannot invite them without the family’s consent.... Roll Eyes
